  After years of dealing with Washington Mutual's megalithic inefficiencies, I finally had had enough at the beginning of 2008. After shopping around for a new fiscal model, I settled on the Mechanics Bank as the best possible bank for me. They maintain many locations around the Bay Area and Northern California, plus they pay for all ATM fees charged by other banks (making them a global win in my mind). The service is super-friendly and helpful --- they even 2-day express delivered a replacement ATM card to my local West Berkeley branch___free of charge! If you want truly personal banking with Californian flare, I recommend Mechanic's. Rats fleeing the WaMu ship, I'm talking to you! ~_^
