  This place is awesome. Shifu (sensei/sir/instructor) James is the man. My experience with him and this gym is unparalleled. Why, you might ask? Other than his background of 24 years of practically every martial arts under the sun under his belt, Shifu has more than decent character. Finally, I was initially hesitant to start training JKD (Bruce Lee's Martial Art Style), but 15 mins in my first class I was more than comfortable. It is practical both for a workout and for self-defense. I enjoy this gym and its vibe perhaps a little more than I should. An easy recommendation.

  My son and I started training at NYMMA in 2012 and we both love the art, philosophy, and the instructors. It is very difficult to find a school that teaches an effective combat martial art balanced with a friendly & collaborative environment. The knowledge, skills, and passion that the instructors bring everyday really make it the best school we have ever trained at. As for the art itself, it may seem simple on the surface but I am still working to perfect the skills I was taught during my first intro week at the school. The art teaches what is equivalent to black belt techniques in other arts the first day and gives you time to perfect them through out your training. It focuses on simplify, efficiency, and effectiveness and now I also take that same approach to everything else I do. The kid's class has helped my son develop a sense of discipline, focus, and dedication. The supportive environment has really elevated his confidence level, on top of that I know that he can defend himself if he needs to. I highly recommend this school to anyone interested in martial arts, but know that it will take commitment and a willingness to push yourself past your comfort zone, and the instructors and other students will be there to support you!

  They know what they are doing. The instructors & people are nice, and understand many different forms of martial arts so they're really good at teaching. I pray others experience what I did

  When you get put in a corner and not sure what to do the New York Martial Arts Academy gives you the power in getting out of that corner. They offer free trials to see if you like it and that's how they got me to come in and continue being a student after many years. Once upon a time I was used to being in the corner but now I could barely tell you what that' like.

  Joining was the best decision I've ever made. It's an amazing workout that I genuinely look forward to everyday and I have never felt better. I highly recommend the NYMAA to anyone looking to take martial arts for any reason.
