I’ll title this review “insult to injury”. Injury: being charged over $450 for a mildly complicated return that ultimately took less than two hours to complete. Upsetting but acceptable if the story ended there... Insult: my wife (who was not at the initial appointment) catching a careless error made by the tax preparer that would have cost us close to $1,000 if it had gone unnoticed. While we were subsequently given an amended return, it doesn’t change the fact that I paid H&R Block hard earned money to screw up my taxes and almost hand a grand of that hard earned cash to the federal government. I’ve been using H&R Block for over a decade (mostly self preparing online) but will definitely never be using them again in any way, shape or form. I refuse to reward sloppy work with my business, especially when all these people have to offer for their (big) mistakes is excuses and hollow apologies.

I have been doing my taxes at H&R block for the last 3 years. I had scheduled an appointment with one the representatives (Rob) for this years taxes. As a result of not being able to put together a set of documents needed for this year's filing, I called requesting to push the appointment. I was instantly treated with a rude response of 'What do you mean push an appointment? Is that a euphemism? What does that mean?' Upon explaining the reasoning behind the call, I was told to file the taxes without the documents and then separately file for an extension but stick to my appointment no matter what. When I said that I would much rather file in one sitting with all the correct documents and that I would have to cancel, Rob responded by saying 'There you go! That is more like my language. You want to cancel! Good, thank you!' and then hung up. I have had nothing but good experiences in the past with H&R block in Plainsboro, NJ, Dover, NJ and Lansdale, PA. Its strange how one single experience will just leave a bad taste in your mouth. The poor reviews on Google for this location should have been a hint. Clearly, they have not done anything to fix that. Thanks, but no thanks.

2015 taxes were botched. My file was assigned to Denise Hendricks-Belleisle who advised me not to pay until she could file an amended return. More than four months later, 10+ emails, 5 phone calls, and an ignored appointment later, my taxes remain unamended and my accounts nearing collection. Huge waste of time, money and frustration. Go to a local independent CPA and save the headache.

I cannot recommend Rob R. at the Pine Street office enough! I came in last minute to file my tax returns, a process that can really be stressful, and he guided me with every step along the way with his tax knowledge. He explained everything, handled my return, followed up and stayed in touch throughout the multi-step process. What a pro! His calm demeanor is what especially helped me through all this. Everyone in the office is nice and helpful, but Rob especially understands good customer service and building personal relationships with clients. He did such a wonderful job that I'm already booking him for the 2017 tax season. Since he already did my taxes this year and has my records, next year's returns should be even breezier. Go in there and ask for him!

Let me first say, I have never once in my life written a review for any experience at any establishment. I always felt they were for miserable people that want a reason to complain. However, after my experience today I had to warn people not to go to this location. My family has been going to H&R Block for years and just this year, myself alone paid almost $500 in tax fees, included in that was the "peace of mind" fee. I had my taxes done at this location back in February by Hank Yoon-great guy, very patient and kind, I had an amazing experience with him. I recently received a letter back from the IRS saying something was missing in my paperwork. I had no idea what they wanted or were looking for so I called H&R Block, I ended up speaking with a random respresentatice and they told me I'd have to go into the office and speak with Hank. As I arrived they told me Hank moved to another location down the street and not knowing if my issue was big or small I asked if they could answer my question. Reasonably so, I did not want to drive to another location to have them answer a question this location could have possibly answered. At first they were helpful and grabbed a representative but all of a sudden he received a call and said "I don't have time for this, I have to take this call" another thing he said was "A better time to come back is after the 15th when people have less going on." I understand I'm not his main client and his clients are his first priority but to speak to me like I am such an inconvenience after paying hundreds of dollars this season at their office was just frustrating. The lady at the front desk went on about a better date to come in and I let her know that is fine but I had paid the peace of mind fee for them to take care of any issues and asked if there is a way I can get that money back then. She stormed off frantically and then returned back within seconds saying "You can't just go see Hank at the other office!?". I let her know that is fine and I would go there she offered to give me an address (like that's a lot of help). I said I would find it myself and left extremely frustrated. My point is - I wasn't even aware if Hank was in the office that day, I just don't understand why they couldn't tell me they cannot answer what I need and they will call the office to see if Hank had time to answer my question. I rarely have time off from work (just like most people) and I needed my questions answered today. They were extremely unprofessional and made me feel like a complete inconvenience. I work in customer service and understand that most of the time your customers (especially walk-in) are an inconvenience but you certainly don't make that visible in your tone, time or expressions. I ended up going over to the South Lake Union office where Hank made time for me. Although I could tell he was very busy, he printed out the form I needed then apologized profusely for me having to come back in for more paperwork. Overall, I will not pay for the "peace of mind fee" next year as I can see they don't have time to honor that or maybe they should remove that option since they are too busy to honor it. My view on H&R Block had completely changed after leaving that Capitol Hill office today, I thought I would never go back to their company. I understand it's tough for big corporations because one location or even person can lose a loyal client just in seconds. That being said, I will not take it out on the corporation as a whole, I just will never go back to this location and I will do my best to warn everyone else I know as well.
