When I arrived they flatly refused to give me a car. They offered no help or compensation; they just said they would take my number and call me when a car was available. They never called. The Hertz central 800 number was also no help. The best they could offer was a new reservation at the airport for five times the price.

This was my actual experience with Hertz downtown Portland. It is by far the worst experience I have ever had with a business - car rental and otherwise. 2/9 330 PM - Arrive for car rental. Wait 30 minutes for car to be cleaned. Check out while waiting. 400 PM - Take elevator to 6th floor. Inspect car. Interior is clean. Exterior is filthy and there is apparent damage. I walk back down and explain the damage. A worker walks back up with me and we mark the damage together. She is new apparently and not sure how to mark it correctly, but does her best. I decide that I do not want the car because the damage appears unaccounted for. We go back down to the office and I exchange the car. The women who appears to be the manager apologizes. 445 PM - I drive off in another vehicle. 2/11 - I return to drop off the vehicle. When I checked out, no one thought to explain that the business was closed on Sunday after 2 and that I would need to drop the keys and rental agreement off in a drop box. It takes 45 minutes to contact hertz, find the drop box, and complete the transaction. Also, sort of funny now, a Hertz employee was inside behind the desk but did not open the door and explain where to drop the keys. Fair enough, the lights were off and they had just closed. One month later - I receive a call from the Hertz Claim Center. They have put a claim out for over $800 for damage to my vehicle. It turns out it was the first one I returned. I knew this and explain my case. They suggest I contact Hertz downtown Portland for assistance. A few days later, I call Hertz downtown Portland and ask to speak to a manager. I’m told the manager is in a meeting but will call me back the next day. Three days pass - no call. So, I go in physically. I’m told the manager is at a meeting and will call me back. More days pass, no call. I try calling one more time with the same result. During that time, I call Hertz customer assistance. They give me a ticket # and tell me they will investigate my case and contact me within 48 hours. One week goes by - no call. I call a week after my initial call to follow up and am told my case was closed. I call the claim center back and ask if there is anything that I can do to prove my case. In a nice way, they tell me no and direct me to how I can pay them for damages. - Here is what I learned from this: 1. Always have primary car rental insurance - either through the company you’re renting from or through your credit card (like I did). In the case of Hertz, you actually have no way of refuting mistakes made on their end. 2. Always have the rep inspect the vehicle with you and get copies of all of your receipts. At this location, it is actually impractical to do that, because their cars are in a parking garage and they have many patrons to attend to. Therefore, I do not recommend renting from Hertz Downtown Portland. Due to their prime location, it is really unfortunate that their service is so inadequate. They do have the cheapest prices though. Again, I really don't think it is worth doing business here as your probability of ending up with a time-consuming situation is much higher than other locations or with other businesses. I say that as someone who frequently rents cars.

The staff (especially a mid age women who seems to be a manager) here is extremely rude. The car they reserved for us is different from the one I ordered online and I had to pay the $200 difference. She doesn't want to help customers at all but just tried to make up all kinds of excuses of the price difference. Finally she just put the keys on the table and stopped talking to us any more. Never use this place!!!

Jo is literally the kindest Hertz representative I have ever encountered. She has exceptional customer service skills. We had a problem with our rental (because we booked with a third party site, our bad) and she bent over backwards to help us resolve it. She is an absolutely phenomenal person and does whatever she can to be helpful, with a smile.

My advice to you: USE ENTERPRISE. We had a TERRIBLE experience with Hertz in general but this branch was the tipping point. We were delayed with our travel plans but made it to the branch by 5:53, it closed at 6:00 (already had paid online for reservations, just needed to pick up the car), should have just made it. No it was closed, completely dark, no one in there. We called the customer service number and told them it was closed but shouldn't be and they basically told us too bad, get a cab. We are business owners ourselves. If this would be how we would treat our customers, we wouldn't have any customers left. When we were there the next day we told the man helping us what had happened and he was completely rude to us. Absolute jerk. The car we got had the check engine light on the whole time we rented it. The only redeeming quality about this horrible place was when we dropped it off early in the AM the gentleman that was cleaning the cars was genuinely nice and helpful. We have a corporate account with another rental company and were exploring our options. We are absolutely never renting from Hertz again.
