I rent cars often for work. Recently this location doesn't consistently assign preferred cars in advance, leading to huge (30+ people), slow moving (hour-ish) lines. There are other rental car locations within public transportation reach of the airport that are probably a better use of your time.

*DO NOT RENT* from this AVIS location…until you read this. The Location: There’s almost no signage in the airport, we waited 15 mins to get on a shuttle that made a circle around the airport to the parking deck less than a 5 min walk away, which we did on the return. The Check-out: We’re AVIS Preferred and waited nearly 30 mins at the counter to get a vehicle. They didn't have the car class I rented and offered no adjustment. The Return: We arrived an hour and 45 mins prior to our flight out and almost missed the flight. There was one attendant checking in vehicles and more than 10 people waiting. After waiting 20 minutes at the vehicle, the attendant checked the vehicle and gave me a print-out saying the system was down and we needed to check-out at the counter. So, now we're in another line of all the previous waiting returns. We waited while one agent was checking people in and two others were just sitting behind their computers. This lasted until we had to leave just in time to make our flight. The Bill: Then AVIS billed me for 2 extra days, saying I returned it late. A $100 rental turned into a $600 charge. The Customer Service: I called customer service, the agent reviewed the check-in and created a case to refund the extra days, because according the ‘system’ they had already checked the vehicle out to another renter, before the date I had returned it. He told me to check back in five days. The Refund: Four days later, instead of a refund I get a new receipt from AVIS for even more. Another Call to Customer Service: Called again, this time the agent stated he was issuing the credit immediately because clearly, I could not have return the vehicle after they had rented it to someone else. The Review to AVIS: Ironically, after I provided a review to the AVIS location, I got an email from Bob Coffey telling me ‘not to hesitate to contact him,’ which I did and have never heard back. My Fault: In the end, this is my error. I read several of these bad reviews and still rented from them because of the AVIS name. If you are reading this, don’t repeat my mistake or it will be your mistake!!

So I don't complain often but WOW. Yesterday I flew into Ronald Reagan. I had a reservation for a car and everything. I made my reservation a month ago because I am teaching at the National Emergency Training Center/National Fire Academy for 2 weeks. I got to the Avis counter. i waited 1 hour and 40 minutes in line. When I got to the counter I went to pay. I had cash. I was told they dont take cash. I was told that people dont use cash anymore and "cash wont even be used in this country in 3 years." I hand the agent a debit card and was told "that might not work either" (witnessed by my co-instructor) The agent walks away. Comes back 20 minutes later gives me my car info. Two hours to get a car. It took longer to get my car than it did to fly from St. Louis. Add to that the automatic tailgate works only half the time VERY DISSAPPOINTED

They never asked me about loss damage, they just assumed I wanted it and slapped me with a 40.00 fee. Additionally, when I went to pick up the car there was no car in the space. It was late in the evening, so we found someone in the garage and he pulled a car around. Needless to say, it was not the car listed on the rental agreement, so when I go to return the car they say they can't accept it. I have spent over 4 hours on the phone and their system was down yesterday. This company is a SCAM, so save yourself time and money and rent elsewhere.

Be warned... Avis Car Rental now uses a chip in many of their cars to track fuel/mileage and will automatically charge for fuel if you don't return the car within the exact specifications of the chip setting. Gone are the days of a human looking at the fuel gauge and calling it good. Instead, Avis wants to nickle and dime their customers to the last drop...and argue over a tenth of a gallon. Tried to turn my car in at DCA yesterday, and for the first time in my entire history of renting cars was charged for fuel despite refueling the vehicle within 5 miles of the airport. The lot agent directed me to a booth to get the charge removed where another agent proceeded to lecture me about refueling the car within 5 miles. I asked the agent not to lecture me on refueling rental cars and she then refused to help me further...calling her manager instead (who never came to assist). This is the last thing ANY customer needs to deal with when trying to return a car. I don't think I'll be using Avis again anytime soon after this experience. Horrible customer experience!
