::ASCEND is a great place for experienced climbers to practice bouldering and for beginner climbers to get hooked to the sport. It’s a clean facility with friendly staff and a variety of amenities. However, a few things are keeping me from giving ASCEND a five-star review: First, the facility only has one of each kind of cardio equipment. This makes it hard to justify buying a membership when you are committed to supplementing your climbing workouts with cardio, yet you may have to wait 20-45 minutes for the treadmill. However, there are other things to occupy your time with while you wait. Second, ASCEND does not have a great top-roping area. Not only is the selection small, but the top roping lacks height. This makes it hard to build climbing endurance and hard to enhance sport climbing skills. Third, I would agree with the other reviewer(s) that sometimes the gym is packed with children. While I understand the commitment to people of all ages and climbing abilities, ASCEND should strongly consider limiting child climbers to a certain time-window.

::I couldn't say enough good things about this place and community. The staff is amazing. The climbing routes are amazing. The membership is amazing. The owners are amazing. If you've never climbed for fitness or recreation, ASCEND Pittsburgh is the perfect place to start.

::Huge climbing center with autobelay for those who might not have a partner who's trained to belay. Lots of room to do your own routes and also a weights and aerobic area to work out. This is mainly a climbing center focused on bouldering so bear that in mind. There is a lovely kitchen area with fridge, sink, crockery, microwave and toaster oven. The locker rooms also have showers and there are yoga rooms etc upstairs.

::Ascend was the premier place to climb in Pittsburgh. Then, the team was smart and marketed very well. Now it's overrun by children. If you're over 18 and looking to do in-door bouldering, you'll likely not want to go to Ascend. Reason being: Kids. Ascend is kid friendly and hosts children parties, children competitions, and children classes. Fantastic for parents and children. But, it does make it impossible to climb from 10 AM to close. I've went to Ascend and left in less than 20 minutes multiple time because of the abundance of kids. Ascend caters to children. It's working for them because I always see the place packed full of kids, but it's killing my interest to climb there. Ascend needs to have an 18+ night or 18+ only section of the gym. I won't blame the staff for unsupervised kids butting and ruining my climb, although I've aggravated a few parents by mentioning this to them. Great for Kids. Bad for Climbers.
