No one cares about you as a person. They don't care your needs or wants. I have been place here with a bunch of people over 70. I am ignored because of my age.my condition is getting worse because the place only serves cheap food all made of chemicals. I have asked for fruit and been told they only have canned food. The salad I get is a piece of tomato and q handful of lettuce. God forbid you asked for help and you aren't old and grey you get ignored. If the nurse finally shows up after 20-45 you get an argument for everything especially from a mean nurse named Julie.

I am not sure if the place is terribly understaffed or the workers are totally indifferent to the needs of the patients. My mother arrived at the facility and after one day the person who was mentally clear and physically stable turned into someone who could barely speak slurring her speech and unable to use her left arm and terribly weak. It took me two days to get anyone to realize that something very serious was going on and send mom back to the hospital where my suspicions were confirmed. A few days later my mom returned to the facility. The facility is terribly understaffed in every aspect – nurses, aids, physical therapists. The staff can get quite rude and defensive both with patients and their family members. I find it strange that patients receive call buttons, but there is no one at the nurse’s station most of the time to respond. That means that if there is a true emergency, no one is there to deal with it. If someone responds, they usually do so just to tell you they are busy and will be back, never to return. My mother was told more than once that they had no time to help her because they had to help other patients. Once she was even told that she has to call the kitchen herself to request the food she wants because they are trying to teach her to be independent and in the same breath they do not find the time to help the patient to the bathroom until sometimes it is too late. Perhaps Van Dyk in its glory day was a 5 star facility, but that time is not now
