I had a great time buying sashimi grade fish and walking around the market. Quality of fish is arguably the finest one could find.

Exceptional Japanese market with some of the area’s absolute top sushi grade fish. You’d have to go hundreds of miles to find a better place. Some interest mainstay items from the Japanese islands as well, and even more selection if you are adventurous or can actually read Japanese on the packaging. On a standard day you’ll find Toro, Hamachi, Hon Hamachi, Octopus (tako), uni (sea urchin), multiple kinds of salmon, and that’s JUST the sushi grade stuff! They’ll also have 30-40 other kinds of fish and seafood. The sushi fish comes in beautifully pre-cut portions that remove all the annoyance of prep work, without cutting them too small to make accurate nigiri. Brilliant and appreciated. Not a ton of distinction between anything that’s sustainable / organic, so do keep an eye on ingredient labels! Plenty of good stuff to be found, though. Parking is a nightmare with just a tiny handful of spots, so try going around the corner to the dollar store’s larger lot. Pics are sushi I made with their fish. July 2022.

Went on Saturday around 12pm or 1pm I think. Bring your mask!!! Freeway traffic is always bad to Berkeley. Their parking lot is small (fits maybe 12 cars in total with 1 handicap spot) and there is street parking but that is hard to find too. Getting out is also a pain since it is up to the mercy of oncoming traffic to let you in. When you enter, the rice sacks are on your right along the wall and alcohol next to it. There are some snacks on a shelf in front of the alcohol. Then it goes onto prepared food items like wakame salad, potato salad(has apple slices surprisingly), shrimp tempura, karaage, yakisoba, tofu skins, that kind of stuff. Pretty decently prices imo for Berkeley. They have onigiri but that is usually gone by lunch time from what I hear, you're lucky to get any if you come in during the evening commute. There was only spam musubi left today which is $4 each and that is too high for me, I don't care if that is the cheapest price in the bay area. After that still going along the wall is the seafood section where most people that come here are for. They go by a ticket system. Most fileted fish are above $20/lb. There's whole fish that are below that there. They have fresh shellfish but they will not shuck your oysters(they have 4 types) because of covid. So either buy/have a knife ready if you're gonna eat it outside, or do it at home. In front of the seafood area they sell cooking utensils. They have different tobiko for $5 and other smaller packaged sashimi near the end. Your order of seafood will come with a small bag of ice probably, I think my sister might've asked. We brought a cooler with ice packs ourselves also. I didn't take any pictures because the seafood area is packed with people waiting and didn't want to deal with privacy issues of others. Continuing along the wall, they have produce against the left wall. There are regular and organic versions of some things so be sure you look what you're grabbing. There is cut fruit at the end. The back wall then has pickled items like plums and kimchi, Japanese curry blocks ($3.50 and up) and snacks. A lot of snacks. In the aisles, you have tapioca and drink mixes. Packaged Asian sausages and dumplings in a fridge. Imitation crab, fish cakes, frozen meats for like shabu shabu. One shelf entirely for sauces and opposite of it is instant ramen and dried noodles. Finally the one facing the cashier area is filled with your teas and sweet drinks. Whenever I go to a Japanese or Korean grocery store, I tend to buy like a lot of drinks lol. Probably at least $30 worth every trip. If I lived the area, I would probably come here at least 6 times a week for decently priced bento but since I don't(sadly), I only come here occasionally a couple times a year.

Very fish sushi and sashimi! There was a long line if you buy bigger piece! I only bought totoro and hamachi block and asked them to cut for me so I could have it right away! Affordable and fresh! Totoro is so buttery! Will come back!

I am from Maine. We don't have fish market like this. In fact, we don't even have Japanese stores. It is so hard to find a good Japanese cuisine in Maine. This place is absolutely amazing! I strongly recommend everyone. They have sushi, sashimi, and delicious Japanese food and the price is excellent!
