  The Avon Williams Campus of Tennessee State University was established through a merger of Tennessee State U and University of Tennessee-Nashville in 1979. TSU won a desegregation lawsuit against the state of Tennessee with the help of attorney Avon Williams; subsequently, the campus, the former campus of UT-Nashville, was named for attorney Avon Williams.
