This is one of the largest Reform congregations in the United States, but people are very friendly. There are many educational opportunities for kids and adults. There are traditional services as well as less traditional ones. Join a Chavurah (group of people with similar interests). Get involved with Social justice projects. All are welcome regardless of sex, race or sexual orientation.

The size of the congregation can be prohibitive, but I thoroughly enjoy the diversity of programming and service options a large community can support. You have to find your niche.

Like any group of people, Jewish or not, there is diversity of all sorts at Temple Emanuel, Denver. Religious, programmatic, economic, social, attendance, even architectural. One plus is that dues are flexible in amount. However, the cost of attendance at various special events may be prohibitive to some. I think that I would not be unfair in saying that the Temple organization is hierarchical, which could be a necessary result of the numeric size of Congregation Emanuel membership. This would be the Jewish equivalent of an evangelical Christian mega-church. It is unreasonable to expect the religious staff to be able to personally relate to each congregant. There are lots of names of donors to be seen around the building, on specific things, from large to small. That is understandable, because the Temple, after all, is a business. Some people especially are the more supportive pillars of the Temple, whether in volunteered time, or donated money, or both, and those people tend to be in the "in crowd". While the Temple invites people to come and "Celebrate Being Jewish"", it really is up to the individual members to decide in what ways, and to what extent, they can carry over their congregational experiences to their daily lives.

I LOVE Temple Emanuel. Not sure what John Wilson experienced or rated it on. Maybe he was having a bad day or met with some negativity. I find the clergy, staff, and congregants very welcoming. It is an amazing upbeat synagogue with tons of resources and events for a variety of people. My daughter just moved to Washington DC for college. She was extremely active in the school and the youth group at Temple Emanuel. The programs instilled upon her the importance of being connected to the Jewish community. So much so that when looking for a college it needed to have an active and large Jewish population. I couldn't have asked for more!
