This is more like a prison then a tourist attraction. I booked my tickets online several weeks out, upon arrival at the entry to the ferry in NYC I was rushed into a line that looked like a TSA check point. I was not alarmed and actually relived at the level of security. My son and I were informed to remove our shoes, take off belts and any metal to be scanned and then ask to walk through a metal detector. This detector alarmed for me and my son and the guard very rudely demanded we keep our hands out of our pockets and walk to the side to me “searched” I was annoyed at this point however unconcerned. I was walking the less then 10 ft to the side when She again yelled “I said get over there now and keep your hands where I can see them” I spoke back at her saying “It is unacceptable to speak to paying customers that way and I would like you to apologize” She responded “What did you say to me? Are you trying to get smart with me? Wait here!” She returned with a port authority police officer who was amazingly nice, however informed me she requested I was Ban and removed for speaking to here the “way I did” When I informed him of what had occurred and the way I was treated he used a wand to figure out that the metal detector was going off for no reason and allowed me to enter almost 30 min later. I was so upset and shaken by this time and my son crying we had to leave. I ask for a refund due to the way I was treated and was informed that was “not be issued”. Stay away and use circle line cruises to get an up close look without this.

Order you tickets online and pick them up at will call. Ticket lines were insane. Waiting for the ferry to Liberty Island is like cattle to slaughter. Horrible. Everything else was good. Although you should make sure you walk quickly off the boat or you may get a little shove.

Misleading as to buying ticket in advance. Sounded so organized and that you had better be there or you would missed your assigned slot. So far from it. Mass confusion. One big crowd boarding. Pushing & shoving...four lines blending into one. They wouldnt have known if i were there or not. Ride was fine. Got me to where i wanted to go and back again.

If you did not book online, head straight to Castle Clinton (the round historic building near where the lines form) to purchase tickets. Do not pay attention to the folks roaming around trying to scam unsuspecting visitors. Castle Clinton also has restrooms for those who need them. Expect the airport-style security check to be tedious and time-consuming but once you’re through, the experience is mostly pleasant. The ferry personnel seemed genuinely nice and the ferry itself, while far from being fancy, does the job. The ferry first stops at Liberty Island and then proceeds to Ellis Island before heading back. In the winter months, it can be bitingly cold on the open-air decks so make sure to wear warm clothing. We only had three hours to spare. Here’s how our visit went: 2:30 - 3:00 : Ferry check-in, ferry from Battery Park to Liberty Island 3:00 - 3:20 : Liberty Island 3:25 - 3:35 : Ferry from Liberty Island to Ellis Island 3:35 - 5:10 : Ellis Island Museum 5:15 - 5:25 : Ferry from Ellis Island to Battery Park (last ferry for the day)
