Smithtown!!!! Our local Smithtown FD board members have installed a 130' communication pole within striking distance of 3 houses. When they installed it they had no permit, they were supposed to go thru the Smithtown Planning Department for placement and it didn't meet local zoning requirements. Their is also a point on the pole that is a same diameter weld, which doesn't appear on the shop drawing and may be a N.Y.S structural code violation. They were eventually given a "violation by the Smithtown Building Department. At that point they made an appeal to the town board using the excuses that the pole needed to be placed their because it needed to be out of the way of construction, in the front by the flag pole would have been an egress issue and there were utility wires by out front. It could have been installed in any one of four corners and been out of the way of construction, their are obviously no issues with getting fire trucks in and out by flag pole and I guess they feel utility wires are more important than neighbor safety. The town eventually gave them a exemption, but I don't they took neighbors safety into consideration. Smithtown! all of this can be verified, they are facts! This could have been done without compromising neighbor safety. These board members should be held accountable for their actions, but SMITHTOWN IS CHOOSING TO IGNORE THE ISSUE!

I just want to thank the Smithown Fire Department for the TLC they used when putting out a small fire in my store. It was the middle of the night and when I arrived they had a fan airing out the smoke, there wasn't any damage from them getting in at all. They saved my store, and in one hour I had everything back in place. Thank you so much and may God always Bless you and Protect you!

Was working in the Smithfield area after hurricane Sandy and had the opportunity to be housed at the Fire Hall. Great people, went out of their way to make us as comfortable as possible. Will never forget the experience. Great folks.
