  I've tried a lot of BBQ. Too much & too often, really. I have favorites all over the country - and here in Northern California, I have a few. In Berkeley, I love Everett & Jones, and have been loyal to them since I first went in the 1980s, when I lived near their San Pablo and University location. In Sacramento, I love Simply Southern. Simply Southern's meats are delectable - the sweet, slightly spicy sauce, the smokiness, the perfect texture ... it's all just right. The sides are terrific too, but the main course here is the pork and turkey. In fact, let me say something about that turkey leg... The turkey leg is much-maligned. As fair food, it's often barely passable. Meat on a stick, not much flavor. But this one is different. It's brined and injected with spices and marinade, smoked under the pork ribs to catch a bit of their flavor, and served only when the skin is perfectly melt-in-your-mouth and the meat is just barely hanging on. It is, by far, one of the tastiest things I've ever eaten. In the world of BBQ, I'd put it equal to Everett & Jones famous hotlinks in terms of memorable-ness. The corncake is also fantastic - no wonder its one of their namesake dishes (the business is also known as "its corn cake!"). Buttery, smooth, rich and sweet - makes as good a side as it does a dessert. If you love baked goods, you need to go out of your way to get some of this stuff; you could found an entire baking empire on it, I think. The staff are friendly, the prices fair, the servings large. I can't say a single bad thing about them. Disclosure: I work with SactoMoFo, and Simply Southern come to many SactoMoFo events - that's how I found out about them. But I'd be a repeat customer even if that were not the case.
