::You are truly just a dollar sign to Retro Fitness. Their trainers can barely pretend to care about you. Their management team can barely answer an email. Their facilities rarely have machines without "out-of-order" signs. This business captures the zeitgeist of “old gyms” by shackling its customers to inescapable contracts, offering outdated machines and pushing its t-shirts and water bottles more than pushing you to do your best. I signed a physical contract with Retro - I was stoked for it. Then my trainer showed up late, later and then not at all. The response? “The cancellation guidelines are stated in the contract.” I beg you to avoid this nightmare and to try out other gyms in Hoboken and Jersey City.

::DO NOT SIGN UP FOR THIS GYM. It is impossible to get out of a contract, and when in a contract and request you do not want to auto renew, they make it impossible to unsubscribe. This is why the gym is so cheap, they make their money off of scamming people into contracts and not allowing them to get out. AVOID. Not worth saving the 20-40 bucks a month.

::Absolutely horrible chain. They told me there was no contracts upon signing up. I recall ensuring to ask specifically due to my curiosity in attending other gyms in the area. When I tried to cancel they told me I was unable to opt out of my agreement until 2019. I pleaded some way to get out of the agreement and they said I could not unless I had a medical disability or was moving. They stated "You can cancel your card, but then we'll send you to a collections agency and your credit will get destroyed". What kind of horrible business is retro fitness running.

::I normally don't write reviews, but seeing I'm paying this business every month in perpetuity, why not? I can't even get a human on the phone to find out what they are billing me for ($100+ this month alone), so I'm documenting here. Pros: Good deal/quality for a gym in Hoboken. Cons: part of the deal is Retro Fitness will charge you forever. No matter what you do. They are like the Terminator. They never stop. I enjoyed this gym 1 time when I lived in Hoboken. I had to move to Manhattan suddenly. They wouldn't let me cancel my membership because there is a Retro Fitness near my new apartment. This location near my new apartment does not live up to the same standard. Specifically - it is unclean - reminds me of what it would be like to work out in the subway. The bathroom looks and smells like a Penn Station bathroom. I have begrudgingly been paying $37.27 a month for a gym I do not use. This month they hit me with the usual $37.27 PLUS bonus $74.90 "mystery" fee (see image). The charge on my statement directs me to a phone number. The phone number has a recording directing me to my gym location. I try to call the gym location (at 1pm on a non-holiday Tuesday - they should be available) - no human available. I would honestly just like to speak to someone so I could pay the rest of the contract off and have them stop hitting me with mystery charges. Their own recording says "A recent unrecognized charge is probably your club's annual fee" but I have not been a member for 12 months. SUMMARY: My advice would be to sign up for a better gym. You will end up paying for it anyway in "recent unrecognized charges," and the frustration at lack of customer service isn't worth it.
