::Now this place is the Fillmore West of guitar stores!!! You go in and it's got a vibe all its own. If you want a shiny new Fender or Epiphone made in Korea or Mexico move your butt up Van Ness to Guitar Center. If you're looking for something unique or something of the used or of the vintage variety. This is the place. Awesome revolving selection of used gear. Get it when you see it cuz it might not be there next time. A great selection a vintage amplifiers can be found here at all times as well. Yeah they look like they have tens of thousands of miles but a lot of the gear in their sounds like bacon smells!! It's only just broken in folks!! someone did the job for you. With that gear, all the best years are ahead of them. Owners Chris Cobb and Ben Levin have been running a internationally recognized store here for a few decades now. This place is a San Francisco institution and should be visited by any traveling stringed instrument musician!! Be sure and get your genuine "real guitar" t-shirt well you're there!!

::I started teaching myself guitar around 24 years ago. I learned playing on a horrible condition acoustic...warped neck which gave the guitar high action which was a workout to play...long story short, casual I was not. Obsessed? Yup. If I'm not at home playing guitar, or performing with a guitar in hand, I seek out and visit guitar stores to look at guitars. Obsessed. There's a music store in Palo Alto that I dig a lot and another in Santa Rosa (which, I hope is still around). Real Guitars is my new favorite. Allow me to list the reasons as to why so? 1.) They have guitars that I'd personally add to my collection. A 60's ES335, Vox phantom body bass, a guitar pedal that was made in 1937, a '60s red Montgomery Ward Airline, bass that's the exact same as Howlin' Wolf's bassist....just to name a few. A super rare little Marshall amp that is wrapped in Tweed á la Fender bassman. If you are like me and can't get enough of guitars, I guarantee that you will love this place. Some might perceive the set up inside as cluttered, it's not. The place is overflowing with dopeness. A guitarist will understand, a banjo player might not. What about prices? The instruments that you imagine being expensive....are. But not outta-this-world expensive. And the lower priced ones are not bottom shelf guitars. To be clear, this is not just an elitist store who snickers when you ask a question and talk about you right when you turn around. Friendly, helpful, accommodating and hospitable are the words that come to mind. What about guitar players that are more casual and are just looking for a strat or tell (they got both and it's the type that will not only give you mad street cred but will also inspire you to stick to playing the guitar because of the special characteristics an old instrument possesses. When I like something, I normally keep it a secret, keep it to myself because I don't wanna share them and risk getting tainted by pedestrian-level consumers. I do not mind sharing this place, and I encourage all guitarists to check it out. Newbies and vets alike. Mind you, it's located in a shady alley way...the path to greatness and amazing things is paved with danger and occasional sleeping dude on the street. I found a place to get all my guitar needs. When you visit, you will realize you have found it too.

::Many cities have a "cool" music store where pros hang out. In San Francisco that place is Real Guitars. Real people selling real instruments and with great knowledge! Highly recommended.

::I broke the headstock of my Les Paul Classic and took it to Real Guitars for repair. These guys are artists! I can't rave enough about the work they did. You can barely see where the headstock was repaired, and it feels and sounds as good as new! Plus amazing service and price. I've become a die-hard fan of Real Guitars. Thank you so much!

::I real enjoyed this spot. It's one of the few guitar shops that's both welcoming and has a good selection of guitars. They have stuff that you wouldn't be able to find anywhere else but deep in Craigslist or eBay. I'm planning to take my guitar here to get set up soon and maybe even pick up an amp!
