::Rainbow Grocery advertises itself as a worker owned cooperative. I'm not sure what that signals (if anything) to the changing demographic of the city, but if that weren't reason enough to shop there, the excellent quality and selection of local, organic and whole foods at reasonable prices is. Contrary to some reviews, prices are decent and definitely less expensive than Whole Foods and Molly Stones. The produce section is the best in the city, matched only by the Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market on Saturdays. Moreover, virtually all of their produce is organic, so no need to check on labels when shopping for fruits and veg. Their cheese counter is managed by Gordon Edgar, who has written one of the bible's on cheese. I've read it. It's great. And while Cowgirl Creamery no longer offers the cheese tasting service that it once did, Rainbow Grocery continues to educate their customers about cheese through on-demand tastings. Add to that the best bulk items selection in teas, coffee, nuts, grains, dry fruit, pickled food, etc., and it easily qualifies as the best market in the city. Also add that the store gives great thought to sustainable products and packaging and encourages reusing containers on bulk items (like shower gel, shampoo, food oils, nut butters, etc.) The only downside (for non-vegetarians) is that RG carries no meat, so you will always have to shop in more than one place. Otherwise, I don't know why anyone shops at other grocery stores when they can shop here.

::Oh my gosh, Rainbow Market is one of my most favorite stops in the city when visiting from Marin. The produce is great. One still needs to check labels however especially if you want local organic. Their bulk food section is like no other and they also have an olive bar. So many specialty items and homeopathic offerings. They often times have someone directing the parking traffic which is very helpful.

::If you only go to one grocery store in San Francisco make it Rainbow Grocery. It has a bit of everything but the best of that thing. The bulk and produce sections are outstanding as well as the supplements section. Their staff is as friendly as they come. Free parking. Expect to pay premium for most items, understandably so. It is SF after all and very good quality. Whether you can make Rainbow Grocery your weekly shopping store depends on your wallet, hut the quality is undeniable.

::I love this place. It's expensive (more than Wholefoods) but worth it. Every time I visit the staff are SUPER friendly and willing to help. You can tell that they love what they do. I really enjoy the whole experience, they have a huge selection of responsible groceries, and healthy grab and go lunch items.

::Good stuff in here. Very interesting products and people. Once you know what they have, come in here with a list of things to get. Don’t expect to stock up for the week unless you are super picky about what you eat, and don’t mind paying the prices. Still cheaper than Whole Paycheck. The lines here are generally pleasant. People seem to enjoy working here, which is a treat. If you are a visitor, drop by here for a taste of “The Real SF.”
