::Beware of this branch here... They profile folks here. I’ve been a retail manager for almost 20 years and I’ve had my share of success so I wanted to go it on my own and start my own biz... which is what I did. I tried to open a business bank account here and was turned away but not before being interrogated and treated like a criminal. First I was met with a rude personal banker who didn’t have a clue as to what she was doing. She was loud for no reason at all. Speaking so loud that everyone in the bank knew what I was there for. How utterly unprofessional. She didn’t know the difference between an LLC or biz bank account. 😱 For real she had to look at some script to figure it out and wanted to argue with me about what I wanted. She went to get the branch manager to help her and that’s when the hard profiling began. Even though it is a single member LLC that I own and I had ALL of my paperwork with me plus more proving I own the biz plus a New York State ID and u.s. passport the bank manager seemed to be convinced I was in there trying to do fraud. I know as procedure banks have to ask certain questions before they open an account but this bank manager was interrogating me like I was doing something wrong. She asked a bunch of questions that had NOTHING to do with opening my account like where I’m getting my product from, who is my manufacturer... Basically questions only the business owner would know... I answered them all. Even though I noticed her tone to be rude and accusatory. After taking my paperwork and making tons of copies she came back acting suspicious. She asked me if the biz address is listed in Lindenhurst why are you in Brooklyn trying to open an account? In an accusatory tone repeatedly. I showed her my ID. And told her I live in Brooklyn. Look Brooklyn address... Well we need an invoice from your business showing a sale. I told her I just started the business and I had a distributor for my product but I needed the bank account in order to apply for a certificate of tax authority to make a legal sale and in order to get the certificate I needed a bank account. She continued to act as if I was in there trying to pull a scam. 🙁 Here are some additional facts... 1. I googled free bank account and they were one of the ones that came up. The problem with this bank is that they don’t have any locations in Lindenhurst where my biz is located. That’s what I was doing in Brooklyn! 2. The Brooklyn branch on Fulton was the closest that was conveniently located to somewhere I can access it. Apparently the wanna be police slash bank manager was not aware the bank she works for has no branches out there... 🤔 3. My girlfriend lives in Lindenhurst and she is my primary investor so for both our conveniences the biz has a Lindenhurst address. 4. I’m Black I guess that Brooklyn has so many scams that when a real customer walks in they are treated like a criminal. Shame on you Popular and the lousy training you give your workers. I am a real customer who really owns a business while being black in Brooklyn. I wasn’t in your branch trying to pull a scam. I was there trying to bring you real business. All my paperwork was in order. All my IDs were real!!!! Everything happens for a reason. Your bank is so small and lousy you can’t afford to have locations on Long Island. So when I walked into your closest branch seeking a biz bank account your branch manager rushed to assume that because I was so far away from Lindenhurst (which is 45 minutes away on Long Island, same distance to midtown manhattan) that it was damning evidence that I was a scammer. I write you off and I will tell as many people I know about my crummy experience. And of course take my money elsewhere. Your loss.
