A wonderful place to experience a true All-American style diner. Never-ending-coffee was a superb plus. The place was packed, and the staff were super busy, but still took time to greet you with a smile. As I was on my own and didn't mind sitting at the counter I had no problem getting seated. Watching the chefs at work, while interesting, did make me a tiny bit concerned for their hygiene rating, but no illness has befallen me so it's all fine. Portions were very generous, and food was tasty and of correct temperature (I had small stack pancakes - toasty warm - and a bowl of melon - well chilled). Overall a great place for a quick-ish bite to eat, fascinating to watch the staff at work, and a brilliant place to get a feel for the country.

A great diner experience. Prices are decent, food is great and the portion sizes are huge. Order a coffee and the staff will keep refilling it for you. As for the venue itself, it's clean, well lit and great for sitting down to do some people watching.

Pinecrest diner was just what we were looking for in the heart of downtown San Francisco. We wanted a place for breakfast that wasn't fast food or overpriced hotel buffet. Small place so get there early (open 24 hours so you determine what's early). We lucked out and didn't have wait. Large delicious omelets for $12 and nice fluffy pancakes for $10. And good coffee.

This place is all about managing expectations... If you're hammered and need some alcohol-absorbing foodstuffs in your digestive tract at 3am The Pinecrest is your jam. If you're rating this place against other greasy-spoon joints, it's up there with the best of them. If you're expecting fine dining and hand-and-foot service, look elsewhere, bub. I, for one, am glad there are some old-school holdouts left in this world. Looking at the reviews most people either love or hate this place, which is fine by me. Oh, and the patty melt and fries is freaking awesome at 3am.

We were in San Francisco for a long weekend vacation. We had eaten at very fancy and wanted a quick, enjoyable meal, at a place where a picky 16 year old could find something to eat. We found this place online and walked over from our hotel. Service was good. All the reasonable meals we had were fresh, tasty and brought out quickly. The portions were huge and we leftover quite a bit since we were leaving in the morning and didn't feel like taking anything back to the hotel with us. We'd go here again, in a heart beat.
