::I’m just visiting New York and figured I should do something the locals do. Also, who can pass up poetry? Well, I’m extremely happy I went. The boat was amazing, the poets - new and returning - were amazing, and the building itself fit the bill perfectly. Will definitely return next time I’m in NY.

::The venue is okay; I went there for the open mic night and the musical audio quality was pretty terrible (exaggerated by the fact that most of the acts were rap songs with heavy beats). The performances themselves were also pretty bad, but I’m not taking that as a mark against the venue. It would likely be better on nights specified for actual poetry!

::I attended the Words Matter Poetry Slam hosted by the 2018 Downtown Urban Arts Festival at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe last Saturday. The staff was friendly, helpful and professional. And, the Poets were great!

::Nuyorican Poets Cafe is a fun venue in the Lower East Side to listen to poets perform. The evening that I went they had four winners of Wednesday night amateur nights compete against each other for the title of best poet that night. Random audience members got selected to be judges and at the end of each of the three rounds the judges give their scores- highest score after three rounds won the night. The judges stay in the crowd where they’re seated, and just hold up number placards to give their scores when it’s time. It’s a fairly tiny space and it’s got a fun, intimate vibe. There is a DJ who plays loud, mostly hip hop, songs in between the poets as they take and leave the stage to keep things moving. There is also a presenter named Jive who is highly entertaining and kept things alive and fun. He also made an announcement that anyone who harasses anyone else would be removed from the premises and that the space is a safe zone, which was great to hear. All in all, a very fun place and highly recommended. My one complaint is that it is a tight squeeze inside and people end up sitting on the floor and up on stage- which I’m sure adds positively to the experience for some people.
