Many restaurants in New York can rightly boast of their ability to recreate the aromas and flavors of a particular locale’s gastronomy, but how many can claim to replicate the inimitable interpersonal interactions that define a given region? Viji akka does just that at this delightfully welcoming establishment. From the moment we walked in and exchanged our first “வணக்கம்” (greetings), time speed up and we suddenly felt that we’d known each other for years in Jaffna, Chennai and beyond. I’ve not been this enveloped by Mother Tamil since leaving India. Viji, her staff and nearly all her customers spoke to one another in Tamil. (Viji akka was, of course, happy to converse in English, Sinhalese or even Spanish to those not fluent in Tamil.) Thank yous were நன்றி, delicious food became அறுசுவை and we were அக்கா (sisters), not strangers, to one another. The dishes are firmly rooted in the foodways of Sri Lanka’s Tamil community, but those who have spent any time in Tamil Nadu will certainly recognize the culinary flourishes common to both sides of the Palk Strait. We kept ordering because the food was excellent, but also because we knew that as soon as we stepped out onto Victory Blvd., we’d suddenly be back in New York; 13,000 kilometers to the west of the Tamil heartland. Perhaps all reveries are timebound, but it’s comforting to know that we only need board a ferry and a quick bus ride to once again visit home.

Curries taste really complex and delicious. Vegetable Kottu Roti was also great, laced with curry leaves and green chilis. Viji (the owner) was super nice and helpful! Loved everything I tried. Update: went back to try more curries, string hoppers, pittu, and the passion fruit drink. Everything was insanely good. The fish curry in particular is a must-order. The food is fresh, balanced, light, and flavorful. Such a gem!

Best restaurant in New York for South Indian/Sri Lankan food. They make you feel at home. The owner Viji is a very sweet person. She treated us like house guests and asked for preferences before preparing our meal. I would go back here any day for the delicious meal and relaxing atmosphere. Everything that we tried tasted great and were reasonably priced. Fish Curry and Kothu Parotta was amazing. I have been to 1000s of restaurants across the world but nobody has every treated us so affectionately like the people at New Asha restaurant. 5 star ✨ any day!

Such a wonderful place to eat! My partner was looking for authentic Sri Lankan food and New Asha surpassed our expectations. The staff was so lovely and sweet, she recommended dishes and explained each in great detail for us with recommendations and pairing. The atmosphere is so warm, calm, and inviting as well. They truly connect with you through and far past the food. Such generous and beautiful hearts, that’s probably why the food is so good! Please support New Asha they put so much thought, time, and care into what they do, and it shows.

Made a trip to this place while visiting NYC just for the Sri Lankan food. Was a little disappointed when the reviews didn’t measure up to the experience. Most of the dishes on the menu were unavailable for lunch. Finally ordered chicken kottu, vegetable buns and Chinese rolls. The taste was adequate at best for the price paid. The staff is friendly towards regulars. Didn’t feel welcomed as a guest. There was a strange smell that ruined the vibe of the place. Overall, this restaurant is ok, but wouldn’t recommend if you are a homesick Sri Lankan looking for the taste of home.
