::Disappointing. MVP required prior authorization for atovaquone, a drug that I needed to begin taking immediately to treat Babesia. My doctor advised me that my condition could be much more severe if I waited to begin treatment. Upon learning this, I called MVP, and spoke with representative. The representative advised me that I could have my doctor submit prior authorization paperwork, purchase the drug before the authorization was approved, and request a partial refund from MVP afterward. My doctor submitted the paperwork and I purchased the drug so I could begin treatment as soon as possible. According to my doctor, MVP told him that it would contact me within 24 hours regarding the prior authorization. To my knowledge, MVP made no attempt to contact me. Approximately one week later, I contacted MVP via phone to inquire about the prior authorization and refund. I was "greeted" by a mildly unpleasant representative who, after placing me on a brief hold, informed me that I was not entitled to a refund because I purchased the drug before the prior authorization was approved. The representative then went on to define "prior authorization", which I found patronizing. In case anyone at MVP is interested to know what could happen to one of its members who has a severe case of Babesia, please see below for an excerpt from the CDC's website: "Severe cases can be associated with marked thrombocytopenia, disseminated intravascular coagulation, hemodynamic instability, acute respiratory distress, myocardial infarction, renal failure, hepatic compromise, altered mental status, and death."
