::Was in NYC for our annual pre-holiday trip. Had lost a ring so I was looking to replace it. Unfortunately, I had forgotten to get a rider on my insurance policy for that ring so I could not claim it on my homeowners. I saw a beautiful ring in the window of Hueb on Madison Ave and went in. After looking at several gorgeous rings I purchased one. I asked they give me an appraisal on the ring so this time I could purchase a rider for lost jewelry on my homeowners policy. They gave me an "appraisal" in an envelope. When I got home, looking at the appraisal, the number and weight of the diamonds and emeralds in the ring was listed but it attached no monetary value to the ring. Given that this is the whole purpose of an appraisal, to know what it's worth, I called the store. Spoke with Fran. Told her I needed a monetary value and she told me it was on the receipt. While at the store I bargained a little and was able to get them to drop their price by 10%. So using the price on the receipt would tell me and the insurance company the value of the ring was really 10% less than the regular retail price, therefore, devaluing the ring. I attempted to explain that to Fran without success. At that point the salesperson who sold me the ring (who was lovely in our interactions) must have overheard our conversation and took over the call. I explained the situation and she asked me if I wanted the appraisal set at the full retail price or the "discounted" price. Full retail of course. Got off the phone and as I started thinking about it I started crying. Now every time I put the ring on my first thought will be this interaction.I know it's stupid but the ring is diminished in my mind. Logically, it's still a beautiful ring but, to me, it's lost some of its luster. I did call back and let them know how disappointed I was. The woman who sold me the ring assured me it was a beautiful piece of jewelry. And sorry there was a "misunderstanding" It was nice of her to try to deflect my feelings for her co-worker but... I'm still sad.
