::Incredible restaurant - took my right back to my time living in Japan. Also, we had an incredible waiter named Spencer who went above and beyond, made us great drinks, and made the whole experience incredible :)

::Amid a pocket of hidden gems where Chinatown meets the Lower East Side, Gohan might be the most prized find. Fewer than 10 tables and two small bars comprise a uniquely intimate environment that's delightfully candlelit and adorned appropriately with Japanese decor. A surprising blend of oldies and reggae juxtaposes that Asian theme for a slightly more eclectic experience that works magically. But the food is what places Gohan among New York's best dinner destinations. Friendly to vegetarians and the gluten-averse, the menu features a variety of distinctive small plates conveniently categorized by protein. Order many to share as your meal or a couple as starters. (Challenge: See how many veggies you can identify in the all-world pickle bowl.) And the soups, salads and entrees are just as character-rich and satisfying, particularly the tuna and salmon rice bowls. Request the "spicy sauce"; proceed with caution. As my dining companion and I were overcoming bouts of winter illness, we forwent the selection of Japanese beers, sakes and other wines, but they looked deliciously adventurous—as did the deserts. Thankfully, that makes an exception to my no-repeat rule. To be sure, we'll return soon for the full Gohan experience.

::Gohan has a very relaxing and comfortable atmosphere. The food was well made and authentic. This, however, does not make up for the multitude of hospitality errors that my group experienced. We waited over an hour for our food with no word from our server, who visited our table maybe three times in over the course of the three hours we were there. The last straw came after we paid our bill. We paid sixty in cash an wrote down the other amounts on three cards. The host, or whoever it was helping us, came back and said we had not tipped enough. We asked her for a summary of what we had tipped so we could adequately compensate them and she said she could not do that. I will not be going back and I will not be recommending this restaurant.

::Certainly a hidden gem - and proof that gluten-free, vegan food (if that's your thing) is delicious. It cates across the spectrum of food options - all of which are really quite delicious!
