::I went to Dr. Cooke after years of terrible treatment at the VA. I finally received medical insurance and wanted to deal with a real Dr. From the first appointment Dr. Cooke was thorough, paid attention to everything I said, and was extremely compassionate towards me as well as being concerned about my welfare. I gave him my medication list and he immediately checked the interactions out discovering several serious possible interactions. He told me to discuss with my current Drs and decide if I wanted him to take over my medication management. It was an easy decision. Since then my medication has been reduced, I feel better, and I haven't looked back. Dr. Cooke is also so much more than the guy I see for pills, we have a serious and valuable relationship built on trust, compassion, and concern. He helped me through some of my darkest days and I dread to think what could have been if I hadn't called him up to make an appointment. His bedside manner is impeccable, he listens intently, takes notes appropriately, and if he happens to not have the information I need he does not pretend to know the answer but asks if it's ok for him to look it up now, or if I would like to keep going; he then emails the info later and yes he always follows up. I have been seeing Psychologist, Psychiatrist, and therapist since my 20's and Dr. Cooke is hands down the best. experience I have had in 20 years. If you want a quick fix or a licensed drug dealer go see someone else. If you want a knowledgeable, compassionate and caring Dr who will keep your best interest at the forefront then make an appointment, it's worth it.

::I struggle with anxiety and a fair amount of related afflictions. The struggle to find viable psychiatrist is as you know significant, The prevalent method of therapists I have seen has been to discretely agree with you to make sure you come back, and essentially fail to address anything, and from what I understand, most psychiatrist just want to write prescriptions and be done. Dr John Cooke does neither but prescribes to the disciplined view that you don't prescribe unless you understand, and hence engages i constructive therapy to understand, and as crucial , help you see yourself and your actions, the cause and effect of behavioral patterns that are unhelpful to you, and how you might self correct. Over time he will include medication when and if the confidence is there that the root cause warrants medication, and your situation is served by the same. I am fearful of my condition, but grateful for the help in navigating this challenge by Dr. Cooke.

::I first found Dr. Cooke through ZocDoc because I had new insurance and I am not that familiar with North Jersey. I was in a very bad place when I first starting seeing Dr. Cooke. Helpless doesn't even begin to explain how I was feeling and then add "nothing was wrong with me" to the equation, you can only imagine what I was going through. When I first met Dr. Cooke, I honestly wasn't sure what I was getting myself into. I never wanted to be on medication but I just wanted to be "better." The first couple of weeks of seeing Dr. Cooke were rough. I had to really take a look at myself and my thinking over the passed X amount of years. Two years later, I can honestly say Dr. Cooke was one of the best decisions I've ever made for myself. Finding the right psychiatrist/psychologist is incredibly difficult. You have to be willing to be vulnerable and open. You have to know that you are not always going to like what you are going to hear. Dr. Cooke not only helped me with proper medication (and multiple adjustments) but he's pushed me to want to be better and actively work on myself on a daily basis. I believe he genuinely cares about me and all of his patients. He listens when he needs to listen and he tells the truth when it needs to be said. I came very close to giving up, on myself and on Dr. Cooke. Myself, my husband and my family can all attest to the fact that I'm in way better of a place than I've ever been before. So why do I keep going? Because life is constantly changing and throwing new challenges our way and Dr. Cooke is a nice constant in a crazy hectic life.

::Dr. John Cooke is one of the few Psychiatrists who combines therapy with medication management of mental illness. Studies show thatrhis approach, as opposed to medication alone, has a far greater chance of success! This is the primary reason I began my therapy with Dr. Cooke. Now, four years later I can say he has done wonders for my mental health. Unlike many practitioners. Dr. Cooke truly listens to his clients, lets them speak. He shows excellent judgment when it comes to responding to crisis, neither over nor under reacting. His approach to healing is exceedingly gentle, as is his bedside manner. All clients will feel safe and protected within his office--and oasis of empathy and compassion for the human condition. I cannot imagine why anyone would chose another doctor. With luck I will not have to be doing so in the future. Dr. Cooke is the kind of practitioner to whom you can commit and trust over time, he will not let you down like so many do. His door is always open for those in need!

::Finding an excellent mental health professional can be an incredibly daunting and tedious endeavor. I was/am going through a very rough period in my life. The loss of both of my parents, a divorce involving 3 small children, while battling years of anxiety and depression. I went to a half dozen doctors before FINALLY finding Doctor Cooke. Dr. Cooke is a game-changer and the real deal. He’s compassionate, empathetic, but also tough and proactive. He has and is continuing to help me enormously with all my various issues through a combination of medicine and cognitive behavioral therapy. I still have a LONG way to go, but I see light at the end of the tunnel. Because of Dr. Cooke, I find myself incredibly more self-aware, open-minded and most importantly, I feel the NEED to strive to be a better man. You need to step into his office with at least a semblance of that vulnerability and I promise you that he WILL help you. If you’re shopping around, make an appointment - you won’t regret it. In fact, I live quite far from his office in Montclair, but I’d travel double the distance to get the service that this gifted doctor provides to me.
