::I started classes at Covington Clay in July 2013 and LOVE the place. I've taken both Hand building AND Wheel throwing as a beginning student. The studio owner and teacher, Rick Hoffman, has developed thoughtful curricula for both classes. His teaching approach is skilled, insightful, supportive, and adaptive to different students' experience and learning styles. He has created a wonderful "vibe" in the studio with a mix of new students (beginners) and experienced potters who have access to the studio space and supplies. I highly recommend this to ANYONE who likes to get a little dirty while they're creating functional art. Many people are given a gift of classes ($210 for 7 weeks) and are thrilled to discover how much they like it.

::I've been attending classes here since March 2013 with my 20-year-old daughter. We both love it. The owner is knowledgeable and an experienced teacher. We've taken both wheel throwing and hand building. He has experience at the college level and elementary school level and runs an open studio. We've enjoyed the curriculum which shows us technique, suggests a project, and then allows us to pursue our own ideas, with the instructors guidance. He also shares source books for inspiration. I just finished a large pinch pot by paddling it which was thorougly enjoyable process and end result! I am now working on a large chinese garden lantern which I designed and consulted with the owner/instructor on how to execute it. Glazing class is always the last class of the session. It's magical when you come back to pick up your pots and pieces and see how they are transformed by glaze! We looked at other studios in town but chose Covington Clay because they allow 24 hour access to the studio. The owner is also generous in using the working studio. We've studied with other artist who separated their studios into class areas and artist-only. Rick is generous and shares the studio with warm hospitality. Its also fun to meet the other students who range in all ages and backgrounds. We highly recommend Covington Clay!
