::I made a solid mistake by assuming I could use the wifi downstairs at this place - as it said "free wifi" on the door. Nope, daring to pass this mean woman at the register meant I was in position for getting snapped at? "Sir! You can't go down there without purchasing something." "Oh okay, sorry about that" I reach for a water bottle inside of the refrigerator beside her counter "Excuse me, that's for us to grab, is this your first time here?" "Sorry about that." What I should have said? "No it's not my first time here, is it your first time excusing yourself for that nasty attitude?" Foolish me, nothing is free in this city, even after paying an arm and a leg in taxes.

::A hidden gem. Coffee is great and pastries are delicious. But this isn’t just a coffee house. It’s more of a library style co-working space with a coffee bar entry fee. Downstairs has lots of pleasantly eclectic furniture to do your work. The vibe is quiet and guests usually go outdoors for phone calls. This is a great place to get work done but beware.. do not take advantage. If you try to bypass the coffee bar fee and bring your own food and drink they will rightfully excommunicate you.

::Oh. My. God. This place is eerily silent. The coffee and pastries are fine, and the overall look of this cafe is a great reminder of its potential, but if you want to even talk above a whisper with a friend or go on a coffee date, this place is not for you. Honestly felt like I stepped into the twilight zone. Everyone downstairs (inside and outside) was on their computer working and the absence of music doesn’t help. I couldn’t talk above a whisper or else literally everyone would hear my conversations. It was the physical manifestation of a misguided New Yorker cartoon about millennials. The only reason I didn’t give 1 Star, was because I have a feeling if there was room in the small upstairs/street level section of the cafe, I might have actually had a pleasant time!

::Very much a work-centered café- their limited space at the entrance level belies the massive basement square footage. Downstairs, an eclectic assortment of chairs and tables abound, in addition to a bevy of wall outlets and strategically placed lights. There is also a small garden out back, which is ideal for study breaks/fresh air. Coffee and food here is also better than you might expect, I’d give any of the sandwiches a try.

::I just love this coffee. It’s so difficult to find a place where you can feel free to enjoy a good beverage, find a seat and work in your things, but Jax is a great option for that. The service is great, they’re always willing to help you. They also offer many good and creative drinks which are also really good. What can I say? I live in the Upper West but always crossing the park because it’s worth it! Give it a try.
