I have several complaints about this company. They don’t properly train their aides and we are stuck with an aide who does next to nothing all day. We gave him a checklist and even showed him how to do things but he never seems to take the initiative to do work and even finds reasons why he didn’t do something on the list. He doesn’t take social cues well and we cannot figure out if he’s just simple-minded or just lazy. We asked them for an aide 7 days a week and for whatever reason, they don’t communicate whether or not an aide is coming or an aide is going to be late. There were several days when my husband and I made plans, case in point, my birthday, and had to cancel because no one showed up. Their scheduling department does a very bad job assigning aides or substitute aides and communicating with us of changes. My husband has been trying to get hold of someone and has left several messages and only got a phone call back after 7 days. Even then, they didn’t want to help him with our concerns and they transferred him to a messaging service. Aides come late and they overcharge us. Good thing we keep track of their hours. One aide walked in and asked saw we had cats. She left immediately because she was allergic. How the heck would you assign an aide who’s allergic to cata to a client who HAS CATS? To make matters worse, they charged us for half an hour for the 2 minutes that the aide was here. How are we being charged for a mistake they have made? Lastly, when the aide left, no one else showed up making my husband and I change our plans again. Never hire Ascend to take care of your loved one because they won’t and they won’t give a hoot if they inconvenience their clients.

I'm an EMS provider.. I had a run in with one of their home nurses. She called 911 and told us this patient isn't acting right, his mind is altered. When asked how he normally acts? The response was "this is my first time seeing him" she also said his blood sugar is low. When asked what she assessed the blood sugar to be, the response was"I didn't check it." The nurse continuously interrupted our assessment saying "he has to go to the hospital!" I had to ask her to calm down multiple times and let us do our job. The patient is not altered, he's answering all of our questions correctly, his vital signs are good and he says he doesn't want to go to the hospital. The nurse sternly said "I've been a nurse for 32 years so you have to take him." I said it doesn't matter how long she's been a nurse, we cannot break the law and kidnap him. This nurse was talking about this patient so inappropriately, saying things like he doesnt know what he's doing, just look at him, and he can't take care of himself.. Again, this man was not altered, knew what was going on and more importantly, he understood everything she was saying about him - in front of him. Needless to say, he was very upset(rightfully so)and starting shouting back at her. In the end, he was convinced to go to the ER for a check up. After being convinced, the nurse left in a hurry, she didn't give us her name or any information about the patient. It's a good thing he wasn't altered, because I was able to get everything I needed from the patient. After the nurse left, the patient was very calm and even offered us something to drink. I put in a call to the agency to make them aware of the nurse's conduct. It was reported back that this nurse said the patient's blood sugar was in the low 20s. If this were the case, the patient probably wouldn't even be conscious let alone completely with it. The emergency room staff confirmed the patient wasn't altered and that his blood sugar wasn't a problem either. The agency supervisor said the patient's doctor wanted him to go to the ER. I can only imagine this is, because of what the agency nurse was telling him(he's altered with extremely low blood sugar)of course he would want the patient to be seen. If the doctor had an accurate assessment of the patient however, I can't imagine he would be wanted in the emergency room. In fact, as I was telling the ER staff what the agency nurse was reporting, they asked if she was really a nurse? I'm not trying to put down the agency itself, more so their nurse and supervisor that defended the nurse even after being made aware of the ER's findings that completely contradicted their nurses findings. How can you say his sugar is low and you never checked it(later on said she did with a number that couldn't possibly be true) How can you say this patient isn't being himself when you've never seen him before??? My suggestion to people using this agency(and others)is this: Don't accept the nurse that shows up simply, because she's the one that was sent. Interview them, maybe ask the agency if they've had any complaints; do your homework. I'd be very upset to find out my loved one's nurse was belittling them and sending them to the ER for made up reasons.
