I guess this review will be more for us "Mea mākaikai" (tourist, visitor), who don't reside in "The Land of Paradise" and make that "annual migration, like a flock of birds" each year, or at least that's what we do! Although "Waikiki Beach" only covers a little over 3 miles it's noted for its views of Diamond Head and the millions of tourists who travel there annually. Here is a little "history (mōaukala)" lesson about Waikiki for us "visitors" (Mea maka'ika'i) to this land of Paradise! Waikiki is located on the south shore of Honolulu, and was once the playground for Hawaiian royalty. The name "Waikiki" in Hawaiian is "spouting waters" and was introduced to the world when its first hotel, the "Moana Surfrider," was built on its shores in 1901. The beach is actually fairly short, with half of it marked off for surfers and for some distance into the ocean the water is quite shallow. Waikiki Beach hosts many events each year from, surfing competitions, outdoor performances, hula dancing and outrigger canoe races. The surfing here is well-known for its long rolling break, making it ideal for long boarding, tandem surfing and with beginners. Waikiki today, is Oahu's main hotel and resort area with a vibrant gathering place for visitors from around the world. Some of the resorts include the Hilton Hawaiian Village, the Halekulani hotel, the Hyatt Regency Waikiki, the Sheraton Waikiki, and notable hotels dating back to the early 20th century, such as the Moana Surfrider Hotel and the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. Along the main strip of Kalakaua Avenue, you can literally spend hours shopping, which I can attest to, in their world-class stores, to dining all along Kalakaua and Kuhio Avenues at one of the many five star restaurants. There is entertainment and activities all along Waikiki and many of the resorts have shows or activities for their guests and to the general public. Even after the sun sets on Waikiki Beach, there is still an abundance of night time activities to see and participate in. But Waikiki is most famous for its beaches and its famous resorts near or on the beach, where every room is just right out the door or a short two or three block walk to the beach. The "Waikiki Beach Boys" perpetuate the Duke's legacy by teaching visitors how to surf and canoe and the "Duke Kahanamoku Statue" has become an iconic symbol of Waikiki. After basking on the beach, there are other attractions to see such as the Waikiki Aquarium or the Honolulu Zoo, which are just walking distance from the beach. In the 1920s and 1930s "sand to the beach was actually imported from "Manhattan Beach, California," to sustain the existing sand due to tide flow!" Importing stopped in the 1970s and by the spring of 2012, the project restored the beach to its 1985 shoreline. I guess the phrase, "what's not to like about this place would be an understatement!" Yaa, the crowds are here from all over the world but who cares, they're here for pretty much the same reasons you are. Our daughter (Kaikamahine) enjoyed clothes shopping with my wife (Pilialo) and my son (Keiki kane) enjoyed hanging out with his dad! Doesn't get any better than that! We usually had breakfast out on our Lanai and lunch and dinner was out on the town. Staying at our resort and enjoying each day went by so fast, I guess that means you had fun which in our case, it was! We have never had a bad time in Hawaii and just writing this review reminds me of what we did during our stay! If I had to add anything negative it would be, "a week feels like a few days," but like migrating birds, we will always fly back every year! "Good-bye, until we meet again (A hui hou)!"
