Sad to see she's been neglected.

My Grand Daughter and I visited the USS Ling many times during the 90's and she was fascinated by this antique war machine. The museum had so many interesting items in it and it's a shame they have let it deteriorate to the point it is now. History means nothing to the politicians of today.

I first visited the Ling about a week after it opened to the public. During the tour as we were about to leave the control room I asked the guide how deep the channel was. He said it was 38' in the middle but the side of the sub near the shore was touching the bottom in about 20' of water. I had noticed that none of the vent valves had saftey locks on them, so I said to him " if I were to start pulling on these levers after the tour moves to the after torpedo room, the sub would roll over and flood , right?" The guide looked at the levers and said "oh my god, your right! I will get someone on that before we have another tour." As we left the sub he took me aside and said how glad he was that I noticed the condition of the vent controls. He said in the rush and confusion to get the sub ready for tours it must have gotten overlooked. Those levers are usually secured in port or when the crew are not present. I remembered that experience when I last saw the ling and was sorry to see her in her present state. She needs a drydock now, but it is unlikely to happen . No one in America cares about history , and the schools and libraries discourage it.

I went to see the Ling as it is rumored that the new owners plan to develop the property that is it on. The old museum is closed and all of the accompanying vessels, with the exception of a couple old torpedos and a missile, were removed from the site ~ presumably by the Navy as they are the owners of the ships. The USS Ling however is stuck in the mud and the river that brought it to the site is no longer deep enough to extricate it and allow it to be moved it to another location. The ramp that was built to allow tourist onto it's deck and inside was destroyed during Hurricane Sandy.... Plus the money would be crazy expensive. So there the USS Ling sits, awaiting her fate.
