I went on-campus back in 2008-09. It was okay at first, but they treat you like a child. You cannot use the bathroom during some classes and have to ask permission to in others. Plus, they count absences and if you are late to classes on their huge/large campus it can count as an absence too. If you miss 6 classes, at least back then, you failed the class and had to repeat it at your cost. I made good friends for a while with two of my teachers that lasted past my going here. They were helpful and influenced me a lot. I guess, there wasn't the "warm" feeling I wanted and the help that I personally needed. Especially at the Peck School of the Art. I once had a piece in the Milwaukee Art Museum as a high schooler and their art professors acted like I couldn't even draw correctly. It was a horrible experience. The biggest problem was professors trying to talk me out of my dreams. And, one Black Economics teacher was teaching us that there is no God and our parents made us, not some God. I don't understand how that fit into Black Economics, or why he also stated that communism is better than socialism and capitalism, too, several times. This is America, we are free to think what we want religiously, and we are a capitalistic society, they shouldn't be brainwashing the youth like that. I was older and learned to think critically of other's views by then, but someone straight out of high school and their parent's home would of easily fell for the stuff pushed there. Like, "Go for the career that makes money and forget your passions". That was preached by a lot of teachers and parents there!

I have a lot of Milwaukee Pride and love going to school in my home but I have had many problems with the Advising staff. My current Advisor in the Education Department is wonderful and extremely helpful but the Advisor I had prior to her was horrid. She knew nothing and every time I asked a question she would hand me literature to read myself. Zero help and ended up in the wrong major because of it. Otherwise the school is great and I really do enjoy it. I just run into staff that are bad at their jobs sometimes. My advise is just make sure your advisors know what they are talking about so you don’t waste time and money.

My experience with UW-Milwaukee's Study abroad program was absolutely terrible. I was discriminated for my age, sex, and gender, and because of those factors, was told I was not a good fit.

I have no experience with living on campus, so I can't speak to that. However, I found the staff to be very helpful and the instructors knowledgeable and understanding. It was easy enough for me to figure out my own schedule thanks to their online resources, but I never had trouble getting ahold of my advisors, either. Lots of classes are offered online. The library is great. They also have shuttles you can ride for free to avoid parking on school grounds. Overall, I would absolutely recommend UWM to any adult/returnjng student.

Daughter had a great experience attending some courses through the Youth Options program at her High school.
