  I have used Union Station as a Metro stop for years so I must confess to having taken it for granted. I recently used it as an Amtrack stop and got a whole new appreciation for the entire facility. Having just come from Union Station in Chicago (which is another amazing building) Union Station in Washington DC is much more modernized. It looks more like a Mall than most Malls do. As such, i must admit that Union Station in Chicago has kept the "feel" of the buildings history better than Union Station in Washington DC has. However, the services in DC (most importantly the service available from those who work there) is much better.

  Clean for a major hub. Easily access the Metro trains as well as Amtrak . Surprisingly some of the vendors are actually within reason on their prices.

  Union Station in D.C. Is an archetectural gem. Well, especially the outer lobby area. Pay attention to the statues of Roman soldiers that go all the way around 4 corners of one big room. Notice the shields. They were added later to hide the naked genitals of the original statues. (See photo that accompanies this review.) Also it's quite sad to see such large population (25 to 50) of Holmes's men and women in the station. Many seem to need help with addiction or mental health issues.
