  I don’t eat sushi, though I understand Umi has some of the best in the city, but I can say they have the absolute best chicken teriyaki and beef teriyaki dishes in the game. I just order both with white rice and go to town. One of my favorite meals ever.

  By far the best sushi in Pittsburgh. Spoke to the waiter about where they got their fish from as it tasted like it was caught the same day, and Pittsburgh obviously isnt near any ocean or sea. The chef gets his fish shipped in fresh daily, and I could easily tell as I have a lot of experience with seafood. Absolutely mouth watering. Now be prepared to pay a decent amount of money too. Japanese dishes, if traditional, are not very big at all. A $22 salmon tatare entre was very small. My bill was $160 with a tip, and that's just me, although I do have a large appetite. So if you go here starving, you may leave a lil bit hungry, unless you want to pay $$$. Anyways, I can't complain. Deserts were fantastic, everything was A1. Would definitely go back again! Absolutely amazing.

  I've been to this place countless times over the years. As far as quality goes, no other sushi/Japanese restaurant in the Pittsburgh area can touch it. The sushi and fresh fish are phenomenal. There is a 7 or 11 course meal option. The waiters are always helpful and never just point towards the more expensive items. It is pricey but it's also head and shoulders above the competition...so in my opinion, not over priced for the area.

  12/24/17 Having been in the freshness business for over 30 years, you become defined by definition. The state of recently made or obtained or not having decay is obvious but in the case of Umi, the establishments selling point is certainly not the freshness of its ingredients. Upon entering the restaurant, one glance at the refrigerated glass sushi case left me wanting to take my party of three elsewhere. The raw fish was obviously dated, dull and lackluster. Even though we made reservations we were seated without place settings. The lighting is non exsistant, it’s difficult to see what your eating, but the reason became obvious. The Hamachi appetizer was bland except for the salty aftertaste and refrigerated flavor. The rolls ordered were cut to the extent that they were uneven and falling apart, the $25 rainbow roll was sweating, yes the fish was nearly dripping liquid in decay. Look at my profile picture, it’s the actual photo of what we were served. After a few pieces of roll, the food was making me sick, my stomach was on pins and needles and I stopped my party of 3 from eating what remained. The waitress was notified, the manager testified he has fresh fish everyday but apparently they never rotate the decaying fish from the fresh into the trash. I shouldn't have trusted anything raw from here. I wouldn't suggest anyone eat here. The oblivious yinzers will soon learn and Umi will be gone. Might I suggest a McDonalds? It would be a healthier dining experience!

  The best Japanese restaurant in this area. Servers were attentive and friendly. The quality of food was top notch. The price was reasonable.
