  An historic opportunity to wander and learn. Beautifully maintained. Needs more public restrooms.

  The Ellipse -- so named because an elliptical road goes around the expanse of green behind the White House -- is also called the President's Park. Each year at Christmas, the President lights the nation's Christmas tree and the Pageant of Peace takes place. Although presidents used to light an annual Christmas tree, the Pageant itself began in 1954. It is an honor to be related directly to the man who conceptualized the Pageant and helped bring it about.

  This is the best place to see the White House and take pictures of it (unless you have tickets to get into the White House of course). There are sometimes protestors, but that's free speech at work and I've never seen the protestors get violent. The best time to visit is between Thanksgiving and Christmas when they have the National Christmas tree up and a tree from each state. The state trees are decorated with ornaments made by children from that state. Park at the Ronald Reagan building for convenience or hunt for free street parking by the Daughters of the American Revolution building.
