Flat out, an awesome resource for anybody with a bicycle that needs work, and a willingness to get one's hands dirty.

I've been here on at least 5 separate occasions now to fix various components of my two bicycles. The volunteers are incredibly knowledgeable and helpful; in the process of repairing my bikes I've learned a tremendous amount and had a lot of fun. If you've got the time to spare and are open to learning something new then this is by far the best way to get your bike fixed for the money.

Classes and community building. The Bike Kitchen is an incredible resource for an urban bicyclist. It's egalitarian and merit based organizational structure is inspirational and teaches democratic principles. This shop is a rare treasure in the modern world

As far as I know, it's the only name in the DIY Bicycle Repair game in SF. Volunteers (who can credit their hours towards an annual membership or a new bicycle) are very helpful if you forget how to true a wheel, and their equipment is in excellent shape... much better than the half-missing wrench assortment I was used to in college. If you have a bike in the city, I highly recommend the annual membership. Being able to stop in 5 days a week to tune up your breaks or scavenge for new parts is a godsend. This is a great community space and a great asset to the city.
