  The shop has gorgeous African outfits and accessories. It also carries many varieties of African art, sandals, etc.

  This is an AMAZING SHOP! So many different and unique items. The staff is very knowledgeable and the owners are just down to earth friendly people. I will DEFINITELY be back!

  I needed some African attire for our Black History service at church, so I asked Google where in Memphis could I purchase some. Several results came up such as Steinmart and some stores I wasn't familiar with. I scrolled a little farther and saw The African Place. The name is what drew me in first. Then I clicked on the photos and was impressed by what I saw. I immediately called my daughter to get up and go with me. From the moment I walked in, I knew I was going to buy something. We were there for over an hour, looking at clothes, trying on clothes and admiring the beautifully unique jewelry and home decor. I ended up buying a dashiki and a head wrap, as well as some Shea butter. What impressed me the most was the various bolts of African fabric that was available for people who either sew or has someone to sew for them. I wish they had some patterns for sale to go along with the fabric. That would be awesome. As with any place of business, there's always room for improvement. I felt that my buying experience could have been better with a few modifications and accommodations. Hence, the clothing items should be categorized and clearly labeled by size. Also, the dress ensembles catered to small sized women, whereas the dashikis went all the way to an 8x. I was disappointed that inside the label of my dashiki it read, "made in China", yet it was still pretty. Even though the dresses were a bit pricey, they were beautiful. More plus sizes would be quite welcome. It would increase sales because we wouldn't have to shop online and pay expensive shipping fees. I will be returning to The African Place for some jewelry I saw that will go with some of my regular outfits as well as, some decor pieces that I must have. If you want African items, The African Place is the place to go.
