What can I say nice about the 8th St Southeast Starbucks... First, let me say this is my personal experience from my visit on 27 Apr 2018. I knew that something was wrong when there was a gentleman visibly angry departing the store as I was walking in. I had seen that there were new featured drinks and attempted to engage the "barista" about them. Within seconds, it was clear that the employee simply wanted to move through the transaction as quickly as possible. I order the largest one, so I thought, and proceeded to wait for my order. The store was lightly occupied as I waited and continued to wait for several minutes before it just seemed odd that my order wasn't ready. So, I walked to the pickup counter and again waited and none of the "baristas" asked if it needed anything. So...I continued to wait. During this time, I watched a barista make another barista this absolutely delicious drink with an overabundance of several flavored pumps and multiple overflowing scoops of matcha. I thought that my drink would be made with such passion but to my dismay, after waiting for a break in the baristas conversation, I asked...do you have a drink for Ed...? With an eye roll, a very disdainful look, and a "Dis you!" she pointed to a small drink that had been sitting on the counter for some time. Starbucks has a huge subculture problem with customer service. Having visited SB stores all over the world, I can attest to buying into the SB experience. I have soaked up the free WiFi while writing the never-ending thesis, but I have never seen the likes of the sad state of frontline leadership at the store level. This can be attributed to SB's rapid expansion and desire to break into the urban market. In this sense, the urban markets are gentrified areas like Southeast DC. SB has spent millions in learning the finer points of international cultural awareness, contributing to making the environment a better place, but SB did not invest in the cultural understanding of Black America, Hispanic America, nor any other underrepresented minority in its home country. We have now seen this in Philadelphia and Central Valley SB stores thrust into the public eye due to racial insensitivities. Why...? How does a store that prides itself on the fact that, “… at Starbucks, I’ve always said we’re not in the coffee business serving people, we’re in the people business servicing coffee.” – Howard Schultz1. How can such a powerful and compelling statement be so far from the reality that we witness on a daily basis. Mr. Schultz's statement paints a picture of the very place that many seek in order to escape the reality of life...if only for a moment. Being in the people business means that someone has to be in the leadership business. There is a distinct difference between managers and leaders, and SB has to understand this if they want to not just manage their organizational subculture problem. SB has to understand the race matters, regions matter, and culture matters...even in America. To this end, 29 May will bring about some superficial change, but the real test will come in the weeks, months, and years preceding this massive retraining effort. But the damage is done, and when coffee is all that remains...will the people ever place their trust back into the money making machine that has played such a major role in gentrifying urban areas and did not take the time to know the folks that were pushed out. #dabruhz #omegapsiphi #goodcoffee #localguides #starbucks
