The Smithsonian Station is a great way to access some -- but not all -- of the museums on the National Mall. For many of the big ones, Archives might be a better bet for a station. That said, Smithsonian is well-maintained and opens right onto the Mall itself.

A seven-day short-trip pass’ll set ya back about forty bucks, but it’s good for unlimited short trips during peak times, and unlimited anything during non-peak times. Short trips are anything under $3.85, which, honestly, will get you just about anywhere in the city. Seriously… my wife had an appointment in Alexandria on Friday. From Eastern Market, that’s a $3.15 trip. You’d have to ride from one end-of-the-line station to another end-of-the-line station to hit that $3.85 mark. Likewise, driving in the district can be challenging for visitors inasmuch as they don’t know where they’re going, have to contend with Maryland drivers, and parking in the city is a b****… and an expensive b**** at that. Just take the metro. It’s fast, reliable, knows where it’s going, and is improving by leaps and bounds every year. WMATA is constantly adding trains and stations, replacing old trains with modern ones, and just generally keeping the system up-to-date. It really is one of the best public transit systems in the world.

Best stop to start your Smithsonian adventure. Puts you in the middle of the mall, with a short walk to the castle.

Very convenient location at the heart of the Smithsonians. Walking distance from just about every museum you will want to visit. The metro train itself was pretty quick to arrive and was off to our next destination just as quick.
