This museum is an underated gem of the Smithsonian Institute. Hidden behind the castle and connected to the Sackler Drug-Money Legitimization Project and Freer Gallery, this three level, subterranean museum showcases beautiful pieces of art from Africa in a scale I haven't seen even in Africa itself. Most of the objects I sorry my time viewing were from West Africa, mainly from the Niger Delta area up through Mali and other parts of the Sahel. The many different cultures of Africa have unique and interesting works too be seen here and it's definitely worth your time to stop in and spend an afternoon.

Very interesting. Not quite what we expected and quite small but definitely worth a visit!

Some of the three dimensional art on display in the museum is absolutely stunning, I was surprised at the low crowd , this really has to go down as one the best hidden gems of the Smithsonian institutions

Wonderful free museum. I recommend it to anyone. This beautiful exhibit of the rich and underappreciated history and present of African art is well worth an extended visit.

The National Museum of African Art is a small part of the Smithsonian museum collection and at first glance it doesn't seem like much, but on second glance, it's a gem. I recommend going to the very bottom of the museum first and work your way from bottom up. The exhibits are small and interesting, but what is most impressive is the circular staircase. Greenery is hanging from it and it's beautiful with a fountain at the bottom and a dome at the top. It's the perfect photo op. If you're nearby, stop by for sure!
