The owner seemed like a very nice person. She had several items that my wife was interested in. In particular, an antique inkwell. Advertised as manufactured in 1876 in England out of sterling silver. The owner had 2 and wanted $400 for either one. My wife chose one and paid cash for it. 24 hrs later we find it is made of plated nickel and worth maybe $50, also that it is current manufacturer. Although I partly blame my wife for a lack of expertise in recognizing a fake, the lions share of my aggravation falls on the store owner. After a brief phone call, she offered store credit if my wife returned it. Unfortunately, we are leaving the city at 7am and have no chance to return it face to face. I'm hesitant to mail it in the hopes of recouping the credit on a future trip to the city.

My wife, Jodi and I have been buying jewelry and antiques from Rothschild's for years! They have very unique and gorgeous pieces! Betty is always wonderful to talk with and always has different "surprises" to show us when we visit New Orleans. We send all of our friends to see her when they ask us where to go in the quarter. You will never find a nicer person and their selection varies each trip in. If you are in the French Quarter you don't want to miss Rothschild's!

Rothschild's Antiques has been on Royal Street for over 75 years. Michael Greenblatt the son of the original owner's has passed but his wife and son are carrying on the tradition of having a variety of beautiful estate jewelry and furniture. I have known the Rothschilds for over 50 years...They have thousands of old pieces from collections that they gathered for over a half century. This is an authentic New Orleans shopping experience. Sincerely,Michael SackettPresident Crescent City Business Referral Network (328 members of the New Orleans Community). Lifelong resident 3rd generation.....(150 years).....

Despite Rothschild's reputation as a purveyor of antique and estate jewelry, when my fiancé and I visited them, they only had one antique item to show us and no estate pieces (despite that I had called earlier and been told they had several items). However, this would not have been such an issue (items are bought and sold constantly, sometimes stores have several and sometimes few) if the person we spoke with (I believe it was the president, Michael Greenblatt, but don't know for sure) had not been so unbelievably rude! The first time we visited the store, the jeweler showed us the one antique piece he had (a yellow gold ring with a rose-cut diamond) and tried very hard to get us to buy it immediately. We resisted the pressure, but did take a photo and recorded the information about it on their business card as it was a nice ring that we did wish to consider. When we told the jeweler we did not wish to buy the ring just yet as we were shopping around and considering numerous options, he insinuated that we would be missing a great deal by not buying the ring that moment for the amazing price of $1295. He then insulted our method of recording information about rings we were looking at. He told us we would never be able to keep track of all the rings we looked at and needed to write the information down in a notebook. Apparently, he felt that taking photographs and writing information down on each store's business cards was not adequate. He then strangely stated, "You'll never keep it all straight. I know how this goes. I've got lots more pieces that I could show you, but you could be here for hours if you did that." I don't know if he was mad that we were looking anywhere else or if he thought we looked rushed. Either way, since we felt somewhat insulted by his manner, we decided to leave the store and continue searching. The next weekend, as we had not yet chosen a ring, we returned to Royal Street to continue looking and decided to stop by Rothschild's Antiques to see the numerous other rings the jeweler had mentioned. However, when we arrived and spoke with the same jeweler and told him we would like to see the other rings he had mentioned previously, he told us, "No, I never said that. I only have the one piece and have not gotten any other items since last week." Despite that we were very polite and reasonable, he was immediately tense and rude. We tried to clarify that we would be happy to look at estate rings as well and he again said he had never said he had any other rings to show us. He did show us the same ring again as last week, which he had previously stated dated to the 1860s. Still interested in the ring, we asked how he knew the age of the ring. I asked if it was due to its cut, style, or maybe known provenience (for example, maybe he had bought it from someone who knew its history). He proceeded to get very offended and insisted that, as a jeweler, he knew the age of the ring due to the cut of the stone. For him, reading the stone's date is as easy as reading the date on a newspaper. But, then he clarified that the ring dated to the 1860s "give or take a few years." After such rude behavior, we left the store in disgust and resolved to never go back. So, if you're looking for a jeweler who at least acts like he wants your business, avoid this place like the plague. Not a single one of the other jewelers that we visited in the French Quarter treated us as poorly.
