  Carlos, Alyssa & Gene we’re all WONDERFUL & PATIENT as I went through my holiday list of supplies to bring back to N.C. I was born & raised in G.N. & grew up with pastries so good they could only be made in N.Y. (anybody remember Bruce’s Bakery ?) Moved to Charlotte, N.C. in 1980, which would be like heaven IF ONLY Richer's Bakery (Bruce’s) would come South too. Rugelach, CrumBuns & Bagels, may still taste as hot & fresh once back in Charlotte (if T.S.A. doesn’t confiscate them). Thanks to all, Happy New Year, I'll be back, & till then, Shalom Y’all !

  We went to Richter's because it was one of only a handful of places that we could order a dairy - and NOT parve - "custom" cake for my grandson's Bar Mitzvah. Gene the baker (owner?), said he could make the cake any way we wanted and that he had lots of pictures to choose from. When we got there he had only ONE picture on his phone and it was a generic one. He then said we should give him a picture of what we wanted (why did he waste our time by not telling us that on the phone and before we came in)? We finally found something suitable, but he said WE would have to download the Hebrew lettering and get it to him since he didn't have the right equipment to do it; so in essence we were asked to do his work for him BUT pay HIM top dollar for our time to do HIS work... When we came to pick up the cake a couple of days later, there were stars missing and the top was slightly off-center and we discovered that he had lied, because he had made the cake both dairy AND parve; something that we had initially SPECIFIED that we did not want! Additionally, on the day we came for the cake - the one we had worked on for him - he had no cover for it to insure that dust, dirt or even bird poop wouldn't get on it, so we were stuck having to use 4 plastic cups and some seran wrap; which kept falling off when we left the place. Not only was that a health and safety issue, but it was also very tacky. Also, he made us put 2/3 of the deposit down instead of the typical 1/3 and in speaking to some bakers later, they said they had never heard of any baker; especially one who has been in the business for 35 years according to Gene - to not have all the necessary things to make a custom cake. I will say the cake was decent, which it should have been given the work WE had put into it and the excessive costs we incurred all around. Gene has a very quick and short temper which I discovered when I called him; he raised his voice, screaming and not allowing me to get a word in edgewise and hung up the phone on me. Per his wishes which I am more than happy to oblige, I will never purchase anything from him again. Gene was unprofessional, a liar, rude, vulgar, and pompous and did NOT fulfill his part of the obligation to us. The credit card company agreed with us and we were given a large refund.

  The place is big , has those old school cookies. Mostly they have cannoli my fav.. but I do think they should try to keep the place more alive so that when you come and try to enjoy a cup of joe it would look more alive....

  I've ordered a custom cake from this bakery twice for special events. Both times the cake was not ready at the time we had agreed upon and I had to sit and wait at the bakery while they frantically worked to finish it up. The first time this happened I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt as the cake tasted good and looked good for the price I paid. Even though I was late for the event, I decided to give them another chance. This past weekend the same thing happened again. I could see the baker Gene and an assistant still working on my cake in the back nearly 45 minutes after it was supposed to be ready. Worse yet, the cake looked nothing like the one we were promised. We gave Gene a picture and we were quite specific on the details, which he said he could deliver. There were decorations missing, the wrong words written on the tray and the colors were off. The cake did taste good though. I don't think I would return here to order a custom cake again because of these issues.

  Worst bakery ever! I placed an order for a cake. On the day I went there to pick it up, the owner/baker said he spent more time than he anticipated and charge me $8 more than the agree amount on my order form. In haste, I quickly paid and left. The cake looked similar to the picture I had brought in, but it tasted nasty. It was way too sweet and the fondant tasted nasty. Is $8 really worth losing a customer forever? I think not. Go elsewhere if you need customized cakes.
