  I did not have a good experience with Rhona Engels. My ex and I needed extensive counseling to get past a lot of severe issues in order to co-parent a child together (hoped to). Rhona made us commit to 6 sessions, which we did, then she decided she did not want to go forward with us and that 'the situation was not able to be improved'. I found that incredibly defeatist of a couple's therapist to say that after just two sessions. I actually took away some positive hope after each session and hoped over time things would diffuse and calm down with the help of a mediator. I think if a therapist makes us promise to go for 6 sessions (she wanted that commitment) then she should be held to the same accountability. I also felt she spent a good portion of the session talking and not listening. I looked at the clock and she spent 20 minutes talking about 'her needs' in term of scheduling and the commitment and then before we knew it the session was over and we got barely anything accomplished. I did not get to have any say either to her or to my ex. I felt silenced. I was assaulted by my ex, and I was never even allowed to bring it up into discussion. She and him also spoke in Hebrew together, in front of me, so I could not understand what was being said. She was not an unbiased professional, in my opinion. Lastly, I did not feel it appropriate for her to be barefoot in a professional setting either. After being in my own individual therapy a year with an extremely professional therapist, I felt this experience was very disappointing.

  I have seen Rhona at different times over the past several years. She has been an exceptional help to my better understanding myself, my history, my relationships, and how they often relate to depression and anxiety. Rhona is one of several I have seen over the years and she has been hands down the most insightful as well as the most able to call to my attention issues that I likely did not want to see, like my own defensive reactions to getting close to someone, a partner or my family, for instance, that prevented me getting the closeness with these folks I was ostensibly seeking. In addition, she is an outstanding listener, recalling details of our current conversation that slipped my mind, as well as details about past conversations. This is a great asset to have in one's life, as as she is able to to see how my moods change and help me see how undercurrents in my life affect work, relationship and other decisions, ultimately helping me make decisions, and think about myself, relationships, and people, in ways that generally cause less depression and anxiety, and that have helped me better understand what I'm looking for in life and how to get it... and perhaps most important, how to share it with others, which I've come to believe might be the most rewarding but most difficult thing to do in life.
