Been a customer of Prince Lumber for Years. My go to guy is AJ! I call with big orders and small orders, and they never say no.

Been dealing with Prince Lumber for Years. Big orders and small orders, and they never say no. I'm a general contractor in NYC and to have material brought to the job site on call is fantastic.

First and foremost, the "customer service" at this location is nothing short of laughable. I approached the counter (every one of the registers was open) and the man behind the counter (without looking up) told me to go to a different one. No big deal but pretty rude. I begin to work with the man behind the counter to put in a decent size order (~$500 of lumber) but quickly learn that they don't stock everything they say they do on the site. Again it's not the end of the world, but it means I will have to buy larger sizes and rip it down to what I wanted. What a waste. We finally get the order figured out and he tells me to expect the wood the next day. I tell him that is not going to work, that I'll need to select and see what I'm buying before it arrives. This is when they let me know that they don't allow wood selection, but I can ask a manager. I'm building furniture, so I need everything to be straight. I ask the manager; his actual quote: "No, we don't do that, if you want to select your own wood, go to Home Depot." WHAT? After expressing that this is the first lumber yard I've ever been to that doesn't allow wood selection, and that I'd really rather give a local business my money, he tells me I can select it, but it'll cost $0.20 a foot, which in my mind rules out any policy or safety concern. I agree to pay, he looks at my order, then says "Actually no, never mind, this is too much wood, don't worry about it anyhow, all of our wood is good." I know that this is never the case at any lumber yard, as suppliers are in command of quality, so I ask, at the very least, if I can see the wood before I buy it. He agrees. The yard boss is not happy when I make this request and has to go in to talk to him. They get it worked out, and FINALLY I'm allowed to see what I've bought. They pull down a few 1x12s and it is very clear that this wood has had some serious moisture and warping problems. Every board is off square in every dimension including over a quarter inch crown. Understanding that the staff who would be filling my order the next day could not care less about my needs, I walked back in and asked for a refund. I'll never be returning.
