The air here smells like the inside of a roadkill raccoon after 3 weeks in the sun.

As a truck driver who navigates these Ports daily and since I have no Union, Terminal or Business Association representation I have no other choice than to petition to and air my grievences directly the POLB hoping someone in a position to effect change will read this. You guys employ the lease the land to the Terminal Operators who in turn employ the lazy, arrogant Unions, Security Gaurds and power tripping, harrassing wannabe real cops (Harbor Patrol). Please Fully Automate ALL the Ports! As a truck driver, I only speak about what I see first hand at the Ports and I am usually a optimistic person, its just the injustices and the way the "workers" if you can call them that operate with impunity here is horrendous. There are so many self created bottle necks, delays, congestion, and not to mention pollution created by the unions/security gaurds just to justify their existence, that it is NOT sustainable. It would be in the POLB's best interest to act now before a point of no return is reached and the Shippers bypass these Ports entirely. Sad thing is that the Unions are so selfish as to not care if there is another generation of Longshoreman/Clerks. They will uncomfortably tell their children how the most coveted blue collar job in America could have been theirs had it not been for their greedyness, arrogance, lazy work ethic, actions and damaging negotiating tactics which forced Shippers to find alternative routes for their goods, making them obsolete. Shippers and truck drivers will gladly utilize alternative routes for their goods, not if but when they become available. Service with an attitude and workers/clerks talking down to you is common here unfortunately, I've learned to not take them seriously and ignore them like whiny little children or as if they are defective in some way I can not immediately pinpoint. The Longshormen see it as a great burden to have to do their overpaid jobs and would rather park in the middle of the roadways and chat with each in their top handlers, yard trucks, UTR's creating hazards and blocking regular truck drivers from navigating the terminal to load or unload their container. We are constantly reminded how yard equipment has "the right of way at all times", so when they drive like maniacs as they do, we are supposed to dodge them and yield to their reckless driving. Case in point, one of my fellow truck drivers got killed a couple of years ago because of a drunk Longshormans reckless actions. They will not jeopardize my new career as a trucker though, once I've got my 1st year experience then I'll happily leave the Ports and never look back. My trucking job will be automated too but that's decades down the line and I will improvise, adapt and overcome, not throw a tantrum, cry, whine and go on strike like they do it at the Ports which inconveniences the whole US economy. The Ports of Rotterdam has been Fully Automated for many years. Panama Canal just increased capacity. Even Mexicos West Coast Ports are becoming increasingly more sophisticated And attractive (unload Containers in Ensenada, put them on the Rails and send them straight into the U.S.). And here we are the most powerful economy in the world with antiquated Ports. Just to be fair, sometimes they do surprise me and provide good service with professionalism but that is not normal. Sorry for the long review its just that I've been waiting 3 hours to pick up my container and Longshoremen just went on their 1 1/2 hr. lunch break so I have a little bit of time on my hands to get this frustration and anger out of my system, it really is therapeutic. I'm not risking getting kicked out of the Ports or being discriminated against or delayed by lodging a formal grievance with them, it would amount to nothing any way. The only solution is to replace them and their rotten attitudes with machines entirely, time will bear this out. Hopefully they dont come back from lunch too drunk and cause another fatality like they did a couple of years ago when they killed one of my fellow truckers. Have a good day =)
