  Payne's is the definition of 'no frills.' It is in a small roadside building where you eat at folding tables and makeshift chairs such as old church pews. The menu options are limited, but they are GOOD! Chopped pork is a specialty (you hear the chopping as soon as you walk in) so went with that. The sauce is tangy and vinegary. I do wish I would have asked for it on the side so I could taste the smokiness of the pork. The baked beans are hands down the best I've ever had. Not too sweet but rich and smoky. The slaw is mustard-ey and pairs well with the sauces. My husband got the smoked sausage. Had a bite and it had really good flavor. Table next to us got the fried bologna sandwich which also looked amazing.

  This is HANDS DOWN the most authentic bbq shack in Memphis. Get the jumbo chopped pork and you will not be dissatisfied.

  Delicious chopped pork sandwich. Lived the taste and crunch of the charred bits of pork. Beans were equally delicious as they were topped with a bit of pulled pork and BBQ sauce

  Their customer service is always friendly and good. They have an excellent memory when placing your order they don't have to write it down, so when checking out the charges are always accurate.Their barbque has a unique flavor and is very delicious and filling. I've been a customer since the 80's. I always return and recommend other people.

  The aroma is quite amazing. The chopped shoulder is very good due to the slaw and sauce. The sauce is reminiscent of sweet and sour sauce but pairs well with the meats. The slaw is a good pickle and mustard base. The beans are quite good, very delicious as they include chopped pork. The flavor of the ribs matches the atmosphere in the restaurant. It has not adjusted to the changing taste of the times and seems to be quite bland. The aesthetics and atmosphere of this restaurant show the labor of love that this place represented. Sadly that was in its prime decades ago. This restaurant is stuck in its heyday, for better or worse. The wait to order was extremely long lasting over 15 mins to place. After placing the order there is another line to pay where the customer must repeat their order and actually pay. A saving grace is that my food arrived quite quickly, a slab of ribs and 2 chopped pork sandwiches. Other items on the menu such as the hot dog or sausages may take a bit longer as they are not already cooked. Overall the restaurant is okay, but not a place I will return to. If more effort is placed into the reinvestment and improvement of the restaurant this could truly be one of the best and mosy visited barbecue restaurants in the city.
