This is the largest of the MBTA subway stations as it connects the "red line" and "green line" trains. The red line, on the lower platform, is an actual subway. The four green lines, on the upper platform, are actually trolleys. This station is cleaner and better staffed than the others. No air conditioning in the summer. One small convenience-store style stall. Think Grand Central Station, but a thousand times smaller and less convenient.

If you’re not a local who rides the train you may find yourself confused. While this stop is a vital piece in connecting the red and green lines, it is the height of busy Boston subways. Green line is always a nightmare to me, the trolleys are crowded and oddly built. Like I said, it’s vital to use this train station and I will use the stop plenty more, whether I like it or not. The signs are helpful and if you pay close attention and think before you act, you will be ok.

Well designed subway station providing important transit connections, as both the Red and Green line trains serve this station. This also happens to be one of the oldest (if not the oldest) subway station in America, as it has been in operation since 1897. It is also directly under the Boston Common, which makes the location that much more convenient!

I come here everyday to start my day right. God, I love the smell of piss and homeless people in the morning.
