A curiosity for Japanese culture and language (which I was only just beginning to study; it would not yet be fair to say I speak Japanese) led me to discover Ouchi Gallery last year. It is absolutely a little treasure, and owner Arisa, her team, and the diverse artists who are attracted to exhibit their works there, all have made me feel more than welcome there each and every visit. I think it's perfectly named - ouchi means "home" in Japanese, and I feel very much at home there. Everyone I meet there does. The space and mood are cozy and unpretentious. There's a new opening almost every Tuesday. Tea, wine, interesting and beautiful art, chatty artists, a very charming host, music, good company and warm welcomes are there as well.

I work in the neighborhood, and got an invitation to visit the gallery on a Tuesday night. It was a very interesting experience, and eventually I went back on several occasions after signing up for their e-letter on upcoming exhibitions from artists all around Asia in this Japanese theme art gallery. Let me tell you a little about my first experience - at first this place seem like one of those cozy cute little hipster art galleries that is in a safe residential building. The art is displayed in a clean white space among the walls, with a giant table and couches that you can sit and mingle. I had a great first experience -- it seems like a lot of locals and people from different backgrounds come to this art gallery on their free exhibition night on Tuesday (I guess the opening exhibition since it was donation based). I striked up conversation with several viewers like myself, and on the occasions I went back for the exhibits that triggered my interest I began recognizing regulars that goes to the gallery. The gallery definition have a big group of supporters, and the staff was very welcoming. I like that on some exhibitions there are special events with the art display, which kinda makes me wish the gallery can expand into a bigger space for groups. It's a hole in the wall gem that have a Brooklyn attitude with a foreign flair. Can't wait to visit again!

been to Ouchi gallery a few times now and I always have a great time meeting new people and enjoying the art work. One time I went there was even a musical performance. I have seen the dog there, so cute, and another time one of the guests brought their dog too and it was beautiful to see it enjoy the music just like like a person. Such a welcoming and cozy vibe and family/community oriented events. I'm definitely coming back and inviting my friends. I don't normally write long reviews but I was so shocked by the mean review about the dog. That's just sounds like someone has a personal vendetta, which would suck cause this gallery is such a great environment.

I started going to the opening receptions at Ouchi Gallery since 2013. Every Tuesday there's a new exhibition of a Japanese artist, which is pretty frequent compared to other galleries! Cozy and great spot to connect with Japanese artists and visitors who have similiar interests in art, culture, language, etc. It seems like some visitors write bad reviews because of a huge cultural difference. New York and Japanese culture are very different and some cannot acknowledge that. But, from what I've experienced at Ouchi, I like the good mannerism and organization of Japanese culture. Also, being at Ouchi allows me to connect on a personal level, and feeling like I'm "home." I recommend that you check out this gallery on one of the Tuesday night openings at 7pm! :)

The small but cozy gallery is a hidden gem in the midst of condos in Downtown BK. It showcases artwork by contemporary Japanese artists without all the pretentiousness of a large gallery space. Almost every nook and cranny of the space is used, including a corner that sells cute Asian novelty items. Although I wasn't particularly impressed by the exhibit I saw, I can see their annual 100 Artists exhibit drawing bigger crowds and making it more robust experience. If you're lucky, you'll also get a chance to play with the cute dog prancing around the gallery.
