We highly recommend the Monte Cristo. We have stayed several times and our most recent trip was for 12 days to help out with our new granddaughter. The Victorian atmosphere is very charming. It has been a bed and breakfast since the 1870s. The decor is 'old San Francisco" with antique prints and oriental rugs As in older hotels, the rooms are small but very cozy. The beds are very comfortable and the bathrooms are state of the art - complete with heated Totojet 'bidet' toilets. The breakfasts are delicious, with lots of fresh fruit as well as eggs, toast, pastries, and delicious quiches (made by Nick Neal the Executive coordinator). Nick also bakes cookies and bread puddings that one can nibble on later in the day with a cup of tea. The Monte Cristo is on the border of Pacific and Laurel Heights. Its great for walking -- a quite a work out if you walk up to the crest of Pacific Heights to see the view of San Francisco Bay from the famous "Lyon Steps" You can also walk down to the Marina through the Presidio. There's restaurants and shopping nearby on California and Sacramento Streets, and its a quick walk over to the restaurants and shops on Divisidero and Filmore Streets. It's very easy to get downtown. Three different bus lines a block away at Presidio and California that go to heart of downtown, as well as a cross town but that goes to the Golden Gate Park, or down through the Presidio to the Marina neighborhood There's a firehouse across the street and some cross town traffic on Presidio - but the neighborhood is residential and seems very quiet at night. Noise was not a problem. The Monte Cristo is our 'go to' place in San Francisco and we look forward to our next visit

So glad we stayed here! Great location, attentive, warm staff, lovely room with great bathroom, terrific breakfast, intimate feeling. Great bed, soft sheets, fresh air through windows that actually open ... I actually found myself feeling sorry for the people coming and going from the big hotels in the Financial District. The one small thing I’d change is that it’d be nice to have conditioner amongst the bathroom amenities. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

We stayed five nights at the Monte Cristo and enjoyed the friendly, considerate hospitality of this charming historic inn. While small, our room was comfortable and had plenty of space for our luggage and miscellaneous travel accoutrements. Breakfast was generous and delicious; Nick, our chef, was quite skilled and very accommodating. The common rooms were cozy and relaxing and there were always snacks, sweet treats and fruit available for noshing. The inn is very convenient to public transportation, and yet not terribly noisy. One small complaint: the pillows were not comfortable. But truly, this is a wonderful place to stay in San Francisco!

Ambiance was great. Food was great (thanks Nick!), Conversation was great (thanks again Nick). Help was great, (Thanks Carl for suggesting Filmore, we found a very nice restaurant for our anniversary), Room was great. Everything was great. This was my first time to San Francisco and Monte Cristo made it so comfortable for us. Jack, you made a wonderful bed and breakfast, thank you so much for the great service.
