Incredibly rude and entitled owner. Entered the store to overhear him loudly complaining about previous customer. Couldn't help me because what I was asking for was too much trouble. Overpriced. Bag of name brand potting soil was 11.99 - same bag at three brother's was 5.99.

I honestly had a good experience, the gentleman Jerry recommended an affordable painting service to me, helped me with my questions and purchases. Jerry is direct and respectable and I don't understand why anyone would leave a negative review or bad rating. Come on guys don't be so sensitive.

Rude owner. Gentrifiers are more valued in his eyes. I just went to this neighborhood hardware store. My family has been going here for decades. My late father was a contractor and was a frequent patron giving this store business for years regardless of the fact that it's extremely overpriced. My father supported local businesses in the community. Today, I was disappointed by Jerry the owner who made it clear that I was not a valued customer. I went in when my car wouldn't start to purchase a key fob battery. Simple right! However, it wasn't. Jerry told me that he had most batteries and gave me a screwdriver to get the fob opened. After I got my key fob opened, he took another customer and finished her transaction. No problem with me. The problem comes when he got into a personal conversation with the woman about her Italian heritage and began sharing about his family, still not a problem. Here's the problem, when I politely interjected and asked if the batteries were in aisle in the store so that I could retrieve it, he told me that they were behind the counter behind him. He told me to "wait while he finished this very important conversation". My purchase is very important to me. This is my problem. I do not appreciate being treated this way. This woman was blond haired and blue eyed and that was the topic of their conversation. How is that more important than my purchase? Gentrification is Prospect Heights is out of control and extremely saddening to me. I've been here my whole life, yet I welcome everyone to he community. The problem here is that he couldn't simply multi task as a business owner and tend to his personal conversation with the clearly new member to our neighborhood while providing a service to me. Needless to say, I told him how I felt. He accused me of making it a racial issue and I made it clear that it wasn't race at the core, it was a neighborhood issue to me and explained my families history even told him who my father was and how he supported his business before the neighborhood changed. This is a major problem here. I will NOT step foot in this store again.

I have shopped at Mayday for over 12 years, and have been consistently satisfied with the level and quality of service I have received. I hate to say it, but sometimes, shopping as a woman in unfamiliar realms, like hardware stores, makes me feel vulnerable and open to exploitation, but I long ago got over that fear with Jerry and his staff. I walk out educated, and have learned a lot over the years. Yes, you could probably find stuff cheaper and a far greater selection at a big box, but Jerry's my neighbor, he's 2 blocks away, and I truly enjoy his company. And if he doesn't have what you need, he will order it for you. What more could you ask for?

I went here because I noticed that all the bad reviews were from years ago and there were plenty of good ones recently. I just stopped by and have a perfectly lovely experience. I spoke to a knowledgeable woman on the floor as well as the owner and they saved me from my own poor plan and got me on the right track. Anyhow, wanted to add to the positive review list.
