  My experience at Madewell was very cold and unwelcoming. When I walked in, I was the only customer in the store, yet none of the employees greeted me. I picked some clothing articles to try on and despite a male employee standing right in front of the changing rooms, he did not offer to help me. After deciding on buying a shirt, I went to the register. The male employee was now behind the counter and ignored me as he looked at an electronic device. I stood there for two minutes before he looked up and asked a female employee to help me out. Our exchange was very short. She didn't talk to me except for asking me to swipe my card and if I wanted a bag. Was my experience so poor because I am Asian? Are Asians unwelcome in this store? Or was it because I wasn't carrying a Louis Vuitton bag? If I had been, would they have been more attentive? To me this situation looked like discrimination and I won't be shopping here again, nor will I recommend it to anyone. (The employees were all white and by the time I was leaving, the only other shoppers in the store also appeared to have very fair skin.)

  Service is always friendly and helpful, and the quality of the product is good. Pricy, though.

  Madewell is a sister store to J. Crew, and you can expect some steep prices. The jeans offer a variety of washes and good quality, and are worth checking out if you're within their limited silhouette, although they do offer tall jeans. Donating an old pair of jeans (any brand) will get you $20 off a full priced pair. Unfortunately, many of the shirts cater only to a very tall, slim physique. Sales appear to be reasonably plentiful and bring down the prices substantially if they still have your size. On my initial visit to the store, I was helped by Emily, who was friendly and brought me options without pressuring me to buy. I have been back many times since. The staff is usually busy attending to the customers and will happily bring you new sizes or items to try. 4/5 stars for the limited fit range, but 5/5 for staff friendliness and the clean, bright store.
