  Land Morphology designed (and supervised the construction of) our lovely hillside back garden. They were the fourth landscape architecture firm we interviewed; none of the other proposals we received seemed as fresh or imaginative. Land Morphology’s design solution for our downward-sloping garden was simple and elegant. Rough-cut stone walls define gravel paths that follow the contours of the slope and frame naturalistic perennial plantings. Somehow the design manages to be contemporary, timeless, and appropriate for our 1927 Tudor cottage – all at once. And unlike many other firms, Land Morphology remains actively involved, long after the project’s completion, in maintenance and seasonal replanting. Last fall they selected and planted spring bulbs for us, which we tell ourselves will bloom any day now. The company’s creative driver and principal, Richard Hartlage, is a learned and knowledgeable plantsman. He wears his learning lightly, alongside his exuberant personality and infectious cackle. A brilliant colorist with a dramatic design sense, he is also a warm and delightful human being. He is rightly recognized for his work on major public commissions and large private estates, yet he was always available for consultation on our relatively modest project. Through the long journey from design to realization, Richard and his talented associates have been there for and with us, ever willing to lend their artistry, problem-solving expertise, and humor. We cannot recommend them warmly enough. And we hope to enjoy their creation for many seasons to come.

  We have a small garden and a large extended family. The team at Land Morphology listened to what we wanted to accomplish with the space we had and they delivered a design that was 100 times better than anything we had imagined. By focusing on beautiful, easy-maintenance design with stylish, substantial structural elements, they increased the usability and beauty of our garden spaces to make it feel like we have more room outside than we actually do. And the planting scheme ensures blooms throughout every season of the year! In designing the garden and the structures, Land Morphology delivered a very thoughtful and creatively current garden that beautifully complements and blends with our 1926 craftsman/tudor home. Oh, and right before we started the installation, we told them we were getting a new puppy!?! No problem: they quickly incorporated a gated dog-run along the side of the house that is practical, lovely, and virtually indestructible. Love this team!!

  Their design is brilliant, beautiful, captivating and fresh. I loved working with them and am delighted every time I walk through my garden . Staff were delightful. I wish I had another garden to plan!

  One of the hottest landscape designers in the U.S. They've handled 3 projects for us; the results garnered spots on the Garden Conservancy's "Open Days" tour and in the book "Gardens of the Garden State".
